This SPAM crap is getting old

It's bad enough hardly anyone posts anything of substance anymore on our forum, but the never ending blasts of spam have rendered this site all but useless.

Normally it is one or two late at night, this afternoon was bad

A few years ago spammers hit our site like they did today every day so it was changed to no one could join unless they contacted us which limited participation. A few weeks ago the board opened it back up to hopefully let this site grow. Only time will tell

This time of year the spam increases dramatically. It tends to get worse the closer we get to Christmas. Another website I am admin on was getting about 30 spammers every 24 hours. It has now jumped to over 100 and if goes like last year 200+ spammers will try to get in every 24 hours in December.

I was hoping upgrading us to Recaptcha v.2 would have done a better job at stopping the bots. Seems it's not much better at stopping them.
