I did some research online about other people having large aquariums on the 2nd and 3rd floor of their apartments and it makes me feel a little more confident to try a 125 gallon tank. I wanted to ask on your guys opinions or to see if anyone around here has a tank upstairs.

The first thing you should do is check with your future landlord because many apartment complex's do not allow aquariums of any size in the building. If you want to set up a 125g I would suggest you choose a ground floor unit, assuming the complex allows fish tanks. Trying to move a 125 up 2 or 3 flights of twisting stairs would be a serious challenge and if it ever springs a leak that is a lot of water on the people below you. From a insurance perspective you could be held liable for any damage the the structure, as well as, damages claimed for personal property by other tenants.

55gallon is probably the largest I'd go. I had one set up in a second floor apartment in college and it was fine.

I'd never do a 125 in a second floor for a few reasons but any tank that big would have to be cleared for sure to
make sure the floor/ walls below could support the weight. I'd also confirm with the renters insurance you hve what happens if you tank leaks. Often times tank leaks are not covered by renters insurance. I'd also be completely up front with them regarding the tank size and approximate weight. I've seen many nightmares on the national forums when a landlord discovers a tank and the tenant has 24 hours to take it down.

Long twrm also be shre to be explcitly (and a little annoyingly) clear regarding pest services in your apartment along with mantinence work. Also get you're downstairs neighbors number because if something goes wrong they'll need to reach you.
