12-gallon nanocube
2004-2009
Mainly softies and LPS
Killer of many mandarins, SPS, and sponges
PC lighting - 48 watts of fury coming at you
Refugium in back middle chamber
Rocking an upgraded Minijet 606 pump
Had hydor rotating return for some wild flow patterns
Water changes every 2 weeks, religiously
Topped off by hand for 5 years
Water parameters? Clueless
Skimmer... nope
APEX? What's that?

Let's see your throw back tank? [emoji4]

Your corals look pretty happy with your PC lights. Proof you don't need the fancy equipment to enjoy this hobby. No fish though? Where is the fun in that?

That's true... the PC lighting did treat me well for my softies.

I was all corals back then. Didn't really care for fish. I added a ton more fish these days because it was a way to bring my wife into the hobby. She loves the fishes. I will say I'm kind of hooked myself these days on fish.

I will have to fire up my old laptop and see what I have on it back to 2005. My first attempt to keep seahorses goes back more than 40 years ago and I failed miserably. Along the way I had several other SW tanks off and on and had a FOWLR tank for several years before I finally got back into seahorses in 2005. I was cycling a 30 long to go with my 59 gallon tank, walked into our LFS one day and they had some H. erectus. I bought one and after a week my kids convinced me the seahorse was lonely so I bought another one. Then they made fry and I was hooked again. Back then I kept each pair in a 29 gallon tank with canister filters, no skimmers rarely worried about things like SG, TDS, DkH, etc. My first nursery tank was a 10 gallon tank. Now my smallest tank for a single pair is 45 gallons with a 29 gallon sump and I will be moving that pair to a 58 gallon tank once it is cycled. Now all my tanks have sumps, skimmers, UV's, etc. and I am OCD about checking my water parameters. My nurseries are now round Koi show bowls plumbed into 29 gallon sumps with 30-35 gallon fuges. Now I am working on improving my water parameters with things like biopellet reactors, Ca and Mg dosing, monitoring DKh, etc. to begin propagating corals. It is a gradual evolution and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think to myself "if I had only know then what I know now". My first attempt to keep seahorses were with WC pairs and I was advised to mix table salt with water until it tasted salty. OMG

I love it! No sump, hang on back skimmer, heater in tank, and with maxijets as flow. It's like old school nostalgia seeing all that.

I hope you don't think I'm poking fun, those were the same things I did so it's fun to look back at how much technology has improved as well as husbandry methods.

I like seeing older pics before everyone started drowning their tanks in blue lighting. Seems like since LEDs came out the majority of pictures are so blue you can't even make out what the true colors are. I'll dig up a pic of one of my older tanks.

How about a picture of my 2nd tank, my good ole' 65-gallon. We all start somewhere!

I love the dual maxijet 1200 tank circulation pumps and the single 250-watt metal halide with 4 VHOs.

Thats why I added 3.5k warm white diodes to my fixture. More MH look.
