View Full Version : The Troubles with LED lighting

Taunted as the future, LED’s still have their issue. With Metal Halide you had the issue of excessive heat and lamp replacement, but they are king. With T5 as long as you stayed with a shallower tank and did not mind changing lamps every twelve months you were also fine. Then drops in this little diode, companies producing them say they are going to be the miracle for all our lighting needs. No heat, another lie. Oh wait we have to be careful because since it is so powerful it will burn your corals and PAR meters do not work well with them.

The preceding paragraph was about LED’s a couple years ago, but can still be true with some Led’s today that still use lenses and also use cheaply made diodes. The following is a list of what I like about different fixtures and don’t like. Oh yea I am biased!

Buildmyled – My favorite 20K seems to be the best as far as coloring up the corals, uses less watts than other fixtures to produce the same results. Buildmyled puts out light similar to that of a T5 with very little shadowing. I never had an issue of burning a coral, so no rules for acclimating. The bad is the company no longer makes aquarium lights, just horticulture. BOO

Chinese Boxes – Not all the same some work, some don’t most are made with cheap diodes and require more wattage to get the same results. Most only cover the area below the fixture. The color is mostly purple and blue because most are afraid of frying there corals. Care has to be taken to make sure you acclimate your corals to the amount of light, because most just put out so much unusable light. But they are cheap so many use them. If you are going to use these at least use the more familiar brands that come with a warranty and you can set your setting to what others have used because the PAR meter is sometimes worthless on guessing how much light you need

Kessil – They grow coral, look nice, the have that clean look on your take setup. The bad is although they grow coral most of the growth of SPS is on top because of the bad shadowing.

Radions – Look good, last, but are very expensive and I still have an issue with a one year warranty.

Aqua Illumination – Can grow coral, one year warranty that stinks, especially since I have seen so many of their fixtures diodes quit working around year two, but wait we have upgrades for $200? Once again have to be careful not to burn your corals. Also to keep from shadowing you have to add twice as many fixtures as recommended by the manufacture.

Ecoxotic – Stunner Strips, great for lighting a tank, not enough power to grow coral but last for years. Work great for sunrise and sun down. I think mine are 5 years old and still working. I bought another more powerful fixture from them and it quit working within a year but they did replace it, but that fixture only lasted 6 months. It wasn’t worth asking for another.

Giesemann – Great Company, expensive, I am sure will work since they take their time before releasing something onto the market. My boss has one of their HID moon light fixtures and it is 16 years old. It still works flawlessly with only one ballast replacement.

So what do you think? Am I wrong? Or should we all go back to compact fluorescent?

FYI I wrote this article hoping that more will post! I figured lighting would be a great subject to discuss.

Alton, on your recommendation we got ours from BUILDMYLED. We have been very happy with them. I agree they do produce some heat, but nothing like the T5/halide I had over the tank. Of course, they no longer make aquarium lights, so I second the Boo.

My Ocean Revives were the purplish/blue color before I swapped out all the 10k diodes for 3.5k diodes. I was a diehard MH fan and the resulting color from the swap sold me finally on LEDs.

I'm a big fan of T5 coloration for SPS but a single years worth of bulb changes could buy me another Ocean Revive fixture.

I opted to just add 3 T5 bulbs to supplement color and reduce shadowing instead.

Not a fan of kessils for that exact reason... awful shadowing.

Ecoxotic is exactly that, decorative lighting. I think the same of the reefbrites but somehow they are 3x more expensive. I find that odd.

I've never owned Radions or AI's but seen some nice tanks with them. The trick is dialing them in as the ability to customize is overwhelming for most.

Chinese black boxes may work fine on softie tanks and LPS but I'd probably never run one on an SPS tank. Obviously I feel the Ocean Revive units different than just your standard blacl boxes, though they use the same diodes and ballasts I'm sure.

I'll be honest, never was a fan of BMLs. I even took a tour of their facility. They seemed overly cost-prohibitive for the amount of lighting coverage they supplied. This has nothing to do with their performance obviously but I'm a value guy and they were too costly in my opinion for what you got.

I bought my First BML fixture 11-2013 it was a 14K regular and I placed it on my 125g office tank. I really needed two fixtures but after deciding to sell the 125 and go back to my 65 I bought my second 14K in a BML clearance sale. The idea was to install them on my 300DD so during the summer I could maybe run my MH less saving my AC a little work. The first year I cut my MH back to 4 hrs, the second summer I cut them back to 3. What I noticed was my growth did not slow. When BML came out with the XB version I bought a 12K for my wife’s 20 gallon. I only ran this light at about 50% because of how powerful it was. After I lost my BSJF due to my office tank getting to 79+ degrees I went and bought a used 20K XB off of Reef Central, that tank now runs around 76 degrees. When I set up my wife’s 65 gallon Planet Aquarium I didn’t hesitate I went with 2 x 20K XB fixtures, and again when I downsized from my 300 to my 180. I love the clean look. In my 180 I keep several SPS on the sand with running 2 x 14K and 2 x 20K XB turned down to where I am only using about 280 watts to light the whole tank and that is with using glass tops to slow evaporation. FYI all my tanks have glass or Lexan tops.

I'm absolutely in love with the AI Prime but I believe the absolute best way to run a tank is a 10-12k metal halife supplemented by LEDS.

I've been in this hobby since the late 90's and just can't bring myself to eliminate MH in my tank. For past 6 or so years I've been mixing things up to get the best of both worlds. I run 2 kessils 360w in the corners, 2 reef breeder photon 16s, and a 400w MH lumenarc right in the middle. My tank is a 144 half circle so it's shape is a pain in the *** to light...but I have good coverage and sps and all other corals do very well.

Do you mind sharing a picture? I'm very curious how you have it all setup.

Yep here it is....excuse the messiness. I've been getting ready for a new baby due next month so things are a bit dusty.

Wow! That's ridiculously awesome! Way to be so creative in your lighting approach to the odd shaped tank. I'm a huge fan of hybrid lit tanks with multiple lighting technologies employed.

I am using ocean revives, i had black boxes before. My tanks have always thrived on LEDs but that it the only style light i have ever used. On ky new build i want to try a T5/led combo just to see if i missed anything with the T5

I went from MH and power compact to maxspect and now three Kessil pendants which I admit took some time to get used to but the shutter affect is dazzling

I had a gen1 radion over my 90 for several years. Now, I have 3 gen4 radions over my 180. Love the controllability and color. Also, loving the results.
