Filter sock location - Quieter setup?

I am re-doing my sump and tank setup but plan to use filter socks. Goal is to make the 300g aquarium quieter. However, I am not sure if I should have the drain pipes be submerged under the water? Pass the water through the socks above the water? Below the water?

I like the idea of the socks because I can use four 4" socks then remove, replace and wash the others. I would buy enough to last me a few months.

My original idea was having water flow into them but wasn't sure if that was the bet method.


What are your thoughts?

Setup is a 300g tank and the sump is acrylic 5'x2'x18". I can cut the sump and add acrylic to make whatever I need. The only thing going in the sump will be live rock.

Not having your drain pipes submerged will reduce sound. Especially if you are running a large volume return pump. I like keeping my filter socks a few inches above the surface, but sunken down into the sump for when the filter bag overflows. The sound of the water running over the sides of the filter sock will alert me that its time to clean the sock. How big is your return pump? If you can go with a smaller return pump, that will have the largest effect on the noise level from the tank.

I was using a hammerhead gold pump but since I removed one tank from the system I pan to use dual rio 3100 pumps. In the previous setup the loudest part was the water falling into the sump/filter pad. That is why I decided on the filter socks and place them further in the water to help quiet the return water.
