The only reason I've ever gone with a canopy was when I ran retrofit lights.

You dont mind the led lights spilling over?

The light spilling over is no big deal. Plus with no canopy, you get better ventilation.

Personally I'm not a fan if you can have your lights look clean on a rail.

Like both with and without I think it depends on setup like a canopy makes aquarium more focal point because light stays inside the aquarium making it appear to glow and pay attention to it beauty first not equipment

I have had both. I prefer with a canopy. I think it makes a better "finished" look and keeps the light under control. My canopy has also saved my wrasse a few times, since he likes to jump.

I personally prefer the look of a canopy, however I don't have them on any of my tanks since I am always trying to find ways to get good ventilation in order to keep my tanks cool. Even LED's generate heat and when you want to keep your tanks below 72' a canopy is not a good idea.

I personally do not like the look of them over the tank from a practical standpoint. Sadly, I have my hands in my tank quite a bit to fix something or re-arrange a frag because of my urchins. The military guy in me likes the appeal a clean presentation of a canopy with nice clean lines and angles but from a practical standpoint, its too tough to mess with. The current tank I have came with a canopy, which I just have suspended above my tank about 12-18 inches. The canopy itself hides all of the wires and bulbs and fixtures but I get the easy access to my tank. Due to having an 18" high tank with wrasses, anthias and cardinals, I have a BRS mesh kit above the tank. Every other night I hear my investment pay for itself when I hear the tell tell sounds of a fish jumping and then splashing back into the tank.
