This is my second time to have an Imperator Angel go from Juvenile to Adult. The first time it took years, this time it is taking a 2"+ juvenile to 5"+ juvenile to now changing as a 6" sub-adult in a year? We still have a few months to finish out but I am still amazed how fast this transition has taken this time. The only thing I can come up with is the great foods available to us versus 10 years ago.

Nice!!! I've always wanted Angels, has he been a model citizen in your tank?

I can't have zoo's or open brains but he is fine with SPS, War Corals, Frogspawn, and softies. Hardest part is he is always hungry, he eats everything including the algae I scrape off the glass. My Black Tang doesn't have a chance. The only thing he chases is the other juvenile Emp. I am hoping that will stop once he gets to be an adult. I do have to watch when I clip a sheet of algae in the tank so he doesn't nip my finger. He is a puppy dog and definitely not afraid of me. If I am in the room he will stay in the left corner of the tank and beg for food with my Copper Band

I am not sure the last Imp I grew from a juvenile was this guys size in four years, he is only a year. If he doesn't slow his growth I believe he could get to eight inches by next year. I attached a picture of my old Imp with the CB I still have

Alton,

Nice growth and nice color.
The three angels I like the best are Regal, Majestic and Imperator.
I am on the hunt for a nice Majestic for my tank. I have not try Imperator due to the possibility that he won't color up correctly.
Like you, I think the way week keep our reef these day are quite different than 10 years ago, including the food.

I see that you got a nice Black Tang in your tank. Congratulation.
The Chevron tang I got from you is growing fast and fat and happy.

Minh I am glad the Chevron is doing great. I have heard on another website about changing Imps not looking so well, my first one looked great I will find out fairly soon on this one?

Do ou have Goniopora or Alveopora in your tank? If you do, does he bother this group of corals? I have some very nice Goniopora and Alveopora and would like not to loose them.

No Gono or Alveo in my tank. For the most part they are too lazy to graze they just sit in the corner begging for food and algae

What is amazing and aggravating at the same time is if I sneak into my living room I will observe my fish grazing on the rocks, and on the glass. Cleaner shrimp cleaning the fish. But once they notice me all natural actions stop and I get a pile of fish and shrimp in the left corner of my tank acting like they have not eaten in days.

An update with yesterdays picture. He is also starting to get aggressive towards his ole buddy the Copperband, which is not good (I need to learn to clean the glass before taking pictures) Oh by the way the algae that I scrape off he eats immediately, he has one heck of an appetite.

Very nice. This picture does it. I am going to buy the next healthy Juvi Imperator angel I see that is reasonably priced. I am going to pick your brain regarding what you feed your tank it that is OK with you. :)

FYI both of mine are Redsea and as juveniles are only about $10 more than the others and come from Quality Marine. I have always fed PE Mysis, Mini Mysis, Spirualina Brine and algae sheets. But the addition of LRS I believe is why this guy has grown so fast

On Friday he was all blotched with small white patches, I am guessing from the stress? My last Imp that went thru this change got Ich. at this stage. On Sunday all the blotching was cleared up. The chasing of the CB slowed some what, he still chases the smaller juvenile sometimes. Its funny because they eat side by side, and then minutes later there is a quick chase.

I noticed blotching associated with my emperor as well during its transition to adult colors that I believe were ich-related.

I recently completed tank transfer method on all my current fish and left the tank fallow for 76 days. The emperor looked great when he came out of TTM.

Just like on my first Imps transition I believe there to be a lot of stress associated with it.

The transition photos are awesome, Alton! You really captured the process in those photos.

Can an you say a little more about the tank transition method you used? I'm having a little trouble applying the concept of "fallow" to that amazing reef, so full of life.

Hello Kristy, thank you for the compliment though I'm not Alton. ;)

On TTM, it's super simple and works perfectly to interrupt the life cycle of ich. Though you will need two separate holding tanks each with their own separate equipment.

I have two 30 gallon tanks that I got off craigslist, freshwater setups are perfect for this. They both have a hang on filter and a heater. That's all you need.

You start the fish in the first tank, then move them 3 more times after that. Each time, moving them before 72 hrs residence time has been reached in any tank. This allows for the trophonts (parasitic stage) to fall off for up to 72 hrs, then you move the fish to the other tank of new water, with new equipment and everything before the tomonts (encysted stage) hatches. Tomonts at minimum hatch after 72 hrs, which is why you must never leave the fish for more than 72 hrs ever or you'll have to start the whole process over.

You then drain the previous tank, allow everything to air dry completely for 2 days, then refill and prep it for the next transfer.

Again, you transfer 3 times total, not counting the first tank they start in.

I usually catch the fish out with a plastic colander, one I got from BBB that is square since it works well to trap the fish in the corners. Try to transfer with as little water as possible but don't worry too much about that as any trophonts that do end up getting moved will not be an issue as they will eventually encyst in the next tank and you will remove the fish again before they release the next batch.

I've added prazipro on the 2nd and 4th treatment tank as part of my QT protocol. Works like a charm.

Here's my current batch of fish being acclimated via TTM.

Oh sorry, I don't think I answered your question. My tank is currently fallow, with no fish for 76 days. I want to have an ich free system. All my fish currently reside in a 100-gallon tub right now. March 3rd is the big day everyone gets to come back home!

Gorgeous! Any idea how to sex them? I'm curious if I have a male or female.

Although not scientific many believe juveniles are females or no sex at all and the more aggressive become the males? I read somewhere that Flame angels if left without a male will change in a matter of weeks. Matt Pederason did a study with some angels using a large and smaller juvenile

Hey FarmerTy, sorry about that mix-up. Guess it helps to pay attention to who wrote the post! Thanks for the explanation on the TTM. Makes a lot more sense now that I understand it wasn't Alton's tank. Beautiful angels. We lost our imperator this past summer when things went wrong while we were on vacation. I miss all that grunting he used to do during feeding time! :)

No problem at all! The grunting is my favorite part too!
