View Full Version : My Pod farm build

Ok, I have to thank 12_egg_omelette for supplying me with some superior starts! If you need pods, 6000 pods for 20 bucks is a steal! I got three sets and as you can see in the video, it's a great start so far. I'll be using his replenishment until I can build a 100,000 pod population in the 32 gallon can.
What I have here is a 32 gallon trash can on rollers with a 120 gallon per hour pump, a heater preset to 75* and an incandescent 3500k bulb. 3-5 pounds of Calerpa, 10 pounds of live rock, some bio balls and filter media.
I'm growing pods for my mandarin, scooter, 6 line, CBB and as a continuous refresher for my cleaning crew. They make a great food source for all the critters in the tank.
Feeding: I'm feeding a mixture of Phytoplex, rotifers, zooplankton, and three to five drops of selcon every other day to improve nutritional value.
I'll also take a couple water bottles of phyto and set it in the sun to try and manufacture live phyto. But not sure if that's working as its only been a couple days.
Again, if you need pods, email or PM 12_egg_omelette and check out what he has. It's well worth the price and shipping is like 6 bucks because he is pretty close to us. Free if you take a quick 20 min drive.
Here is what the whole setup looks like

Glad to hear, things are going well for you. Exciting to see how this turns out for you, they should def help keep that live rock in there clean. Let me know if you need any phyto to keep your culture up and going.
I really like this idea, I try to feed my tank a mixture of rotifers, tigger pods, tisbe pods, and tangerine pods daily.

There is a Koralina power head under everything that I turn on every three days just to stir stuff up. It's only on for 5-10 min and then off again.

I also rotate the bio balls in and out of my other fuges to collect detritus. Then I toss them in here

I use doser to dose phyto at a constant rate at which it can be cleared out every four hours. They have tiny bellies and more than that and they tend to go hungry. More phyto and you start to get a bacteria build up and can crash a culture. I also do periodic water changes and every so often do a full water change and use sieves to collect pods and put them back in. Air lines are all over the place. I don't have any pictures of mine.

Hi 12_Egg,
I am curious, are you culturing the tisbe, tangerine and tiger pods in the same system? Also, I thought I saw some amphipods in Frogman's video are they part of your culture? The reason I am asking is I am always looking for a source of pods, unfortunately tiger pods and amphipods don't mix well with seahorse fry. My fry will consume several 100,000 pods in a matter of a few days and it can be hard to keep up with them. You two have also given me some ideas on how to boost my pod production which I really do appreciate.

He's the man! I have two primary sources for my pods. Josh and AQuarium Depot. (Formerly known as Reefs2Go)
I am getting all my Copepods from Josh (12 egg) and my amphipods from them (I'll occasionally go to getypurpods.com or algae barn) but now that I found Josh and he is Local. I'll stick with him.
All my Amphipods come from AQuarium Depot and only when they are on sale (bogo). I'll usually get 4 Bogo packs (8000 Amphipods) for 75.00 and then get free shipping. Josh is 1000% cheaper but I like the mixture. Not sure if the Amphipods will eat the tigger pods. Also, josh told me today that he can send starts of his Phyto so that will be something else to look into.
I'd like to find a way to connect my 35 gallon pod setup to the fuge on my regular tank so water changes all happen at once. But that's gonna be tricky making it look appealing.

Ok. Thanks. Plus I switch out bio balls from my fuges and throw them in as well.
Next investment in 2016. Apex. A trigger I really have to pull this coming year! :-p

Controllers are very nice puratek has a controller that does auto water changes

You know. I thought about that, but auto water changes makes me nervous. I don't mind doing them and I have a pretty good system (makes little mess, makes my wife happy, this my life is better).
I need/want a controller more for security rather than automation. My primary worries are temp and leaks. Don't want to make it too conplex
