My tank temps swing from 80 to 82.5 and was wondering if this maybe too high. Nothing in the tank is suffering from what I can see but I've never had a tank run this high in temp, I usually run them 78 degrees. What are yalls thought on this and am I border line too hot? I know temps at a reef can sway upwards of 83 to 84 but just want your opinion as to what affects it causes at this temp if any. Tank is 90% sps and some lps and Zoos. Thanks in advance guys.

You're on the upper end of safe in my opinion. I've seen tanks run a degree or two higher with no issue. As long as you don't climb any more I'd say you're pretty safe as long as you don't see any negative effects. Has it been running at this temp for awhile?

Yea it's been running this temp for about 2 or 3 months since I added 4 t-5 to my LEDs. I only run the t-5 4 hrs a day be cause of the heat and run a fan to cool when the t-5 come on. I have a chiller but didn't want to use it if it wasnt needed. Thanks for your experience. It haven't had the t-5 running while its middle of summer while my skimmer is pulling in hot outside air yet so I may need to put the chiller on anyways.

You're on the higher end but prob ok. If it goes half a degree higher I would cut on your chiller.

Thanks guys! Do you run fans on yalls tanks and if so what kind of fans and where did you get them? I only have a Cbreeze and that's the only fan I have and I'm thinking more fans or larger fan would help out more.

Big difference from my 75 degrees on my 300. Glad I use metal halide lighting instead of those hot leds! Ha, Ha

Yea the t-5 put me up to 82 so I couldn't imagine 2 halides over this tank with canopy. Your lucky you have 300 gallons to soak up that heat and not see much difference. Cut your water volume in half and you would be in trouble lol.

Have you checked to se if it is maybe your pumps(skimmer/return) adding to your heat load?

Just get a couple of clip on fans and point them blow across the t5s and the top of the tank. Should drop you a degree or two. I would be more concerned with temp swings from low at night to high. That can stress out fish and coral.

I was fine at 80 then I added t-5, before t-5 it stayed at 80 or 79. At night it drops to 80 so I know I'm still good on all the pumps. I added 2 6255 Tunze pumps and they didn't add any to the temp which I was surprised. Love the pumps!http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/14/3e0b809f411681b5cc1fd7ca5db4b069.jpg

My temp swing is from 80 to 81.5 or 81.9 so almost 2 degrees. But I would like it to only swing 1 degree or less.

Tony getting away from my MH is king comments on large tanks, what is your heater set on? If your tank is running at 80 degrees with no lighting, I am guessing unless you have your heater set at 80 your return and skimmer pumps are adding a bunch of heat since your home is set at 74 (I wonder who told me that info?)

Lol yes it's at 74 degrees at my house and so that helps. Skimmer does add to the heat even if it's dc motor. My main pump is a Fluval sp6 which adds to the heat also. I don't have a heater for this tank, we'll actually i do I just haven't put it in the sump. So I have 2 big pumps heating the water then my 6 LEDs help heat the water ( yes LEDs put out some heat ) and then my t-5 that put me over 80. I think I'm just going to add the chiller and set it to 80 so it only kicks on when the t5 kick on and makes the temp jump. Tank is doing fine it just bugs me to see the temp that high. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/14/ae8d3f7f4c7fc321502dcf53b98189f3.jpg

AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3, Quiet 120mm USB Fan for Receiver DVR Playstation Xbox Computer Cabinet Cooling

I use these (4) with two of the recommended USB plugs (buy the twin adapter) They are SUPER quiet and push a fairly good amount of air.
I have images of my install in the canopy if you want to know how I installed them. Let me know and I can add them later this evening

Thank you I will have to look them up and see if I can make them work. How long have you been using them and do you have them mounted to you canopy? What was the temp drop after you added them and how long do you run them.

Yes, I added them directly to my canopy. They are 4.7x4.7x1 and they have rubber stoppers on each side to help minimize vibration. What I did was to cut (2) 3 1/2 inch holes in the right and left side of my canopy. I placed the fan on and marked the holes for drilling. When I placed them, I placed 2 fans blowing inwards, and the other two (on the other side) blowing outwards. My fixture has internal fans that flow in the same direction and also aid in the flow.

My tank was running about 82 without my chiller which was always running. Now my chiller comes on a few times a day and my tank hovers 77 at night and 79-80 during the day. It still pushes heat into the water, but I might resolve that by changing my return pump to a sicce 1000 GPH(I don't think I spelled that right) to reduce the noise even more (use a Rio 750 GPH now) and take out more heat. My skimmer is a coralline 220 (for a 125) and it doesn't really seem to add any heat. I know if I increase my flow through the sump, my temp will drop even more. There are other fans that are a little noisier and they push out GREAT volumes of air, but they can be noisy. I have two AC fans that I keep handy in case of a AC failure, they push out 4 times the air volume, but they run at 50 DB (Really Loud) But those don't bother me in that case.

Here are the items you will need to do that canopy job.
3 1/2 hole bit (You can go 4 inch if you want, but the smaller hole tends to focus the air more)
16 3 inch nut and bolt combo you will need to look at hole size on your fan for mounting( find the contractor packs at Lowes for 8 bucks)
2 Aukey 12W / 2.4A Home Travel USB Wall Charger Adapter with AIPower Tech for Apple iPhone 6S / 6S Plus, (get the 2 port version)
4 fans: AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3, Quiet 120mm USB Fan for Receiver DVR Playstation Xbox Computer Cabinet Cooling
8 (4 for install and 4 for replacements) SilverStone 120mm Fan Filter with Grill FF121 (Black)
Extension USB cords or a way to connect them to a controller if you have one. If not, don't sweat it, Mine are set with my MH and are always on when my MH are on.

Ill take a pic of the end product tonight and post it for you. But look at my tank build thread on R2R and you will get a feel for what I did.

Those are my old fans, and I have since mounted them on the outside because my new fixture is too long to fit inside (Im picking up a used 3 MH 150 wt fixture and 4 98Wt compact Fl actinics) Its overall wattage is more than my 2 250 MH but its full tank coverage so I am willing to drop the MH wattage just a bit)

Let me know if I can help with anything else :-)

That's awesome Frogman! Thanks for all the info and help and I may try it. I just need to convince the wife lol. She will probably say (you have a chiller just use that) lol. Your a great help thanks for you knowledge. I know I have too much light on my tank with 6 hydra 52 and 4 t5 but wanted to make sure I had enough and slowly but surly I have been lowering my % that the LEDs put out because my sps are growing away from the light. Never thought you could over do it with sps but I found out you really don't need much but you need coverage. Your tank looks awesome also!
