Wondering if anyone in the area is trying to breed Angels. I am planning on giving this a try.

There are a couple of us here on MAAST, I have seen my male and larger female mate and then lay eggs in the water column. Since I have no way of collecting eggs or raising the fry its just the thought of being able to create a pair and then a harem that was fun. In my office I have a pair of Golden Angels that I bought from LA DD, but have not witnessed them actually mate yet. I am also trying to pair up Regal Angels and Imperators.

Since the subject has come up about pairing I will insert my story. I have a 5” Red Sea Regal (male) in my 300. I added a 2”+ juvenile red sea a couple months ago using a thin piece of plexi glass sectioning off 1/3 of the tank with holes large enough for most of my fish to pass through except the large regal and my copper band. The male hates the juvey and will go at him profusely. The juvenile stays on his side most of the day but several times a day he will cross over. When that happens and the larger notices it the chase is on. And although so easy for the little one to retreat back though the holes, instead it takes refuge into a honey hole to aggravate the larger on who can’t quit get his bigger head into. When the larger one decides to turn slightly the smaller one comes out and pecks on the larger before darting back in for safety. This goes on for a few minutes and then the little one swim’s back into its side of the tank. It is comical to watch except for it is tough watching a $300 fish getting its fins sliced sometimes. In this same tank I have my pair of Flame Angels that paired very similar except the smaller used my birds nest coral to hide in when the chase ensued. Before these two paired during feeding time the smaller one would come out of hiding grab a piece of food from the larger flames mouth and swim like heck back to the protection of the birds nest. I wish I would have documented how long it took for the aggression to stop but I did not. I am going to give it another month; if the aggression does not stop I know I will have to make a decision on which to keep?

An update on my pairing of regals
I keep a plexi-glass divider that separates my 300 into 2/3’s for the male and 1/3 for the juvenile. I have holes cut into the plexi-glass so the little one can go back and forth. A couple weeks ago I noticed my male had squeezed into the side with the little one but no aggression, and as a matter of fact they ate together. I thought I had it made so I removed the divider, the male went after the little one like no tomorrow? So I put the divider back in because the little ones tail is moderately shredded. Since that time if the male gets in with the little one, they seem to get along including eating together. When the male is on his section and sees the little one he acts like he is going to kill her, racing up to the plexi-glass, swimming up and down. If the little one goes on the male’s side, the chase is on but instead of retreating back to her side she uses a honey hole to aggravate the male. No matter how hard he tries he can’t get to her so he swims around the pile of live rock like a mad person. This happens at least once if not twice a day. The male visiting the female’s side happens at least twice a week with always the same outcome, eating together with little or no aggression? My question to you is let it be, and see what happens or should they have already paired up and it’s time to find another mate or just give up?

Aggression is not as bad, still not paired

They seem to get along very well, I am not going to say a courtship but it looks promising

Still not paired going to try to add a third Regal in two weeks

That did not work, the Regal I added was in between my male and the smaller one. Not only did the male attack but the smaller one did also. The third one was removed and sold.
