Just bought a used 29 gallon Biocibe with live rock sand some zoas and a coral that I don't know. Anyone know what this is?

Looks like a blue clove polyp colony!

Thanks Zack. I had some clove polyps before and they had a long stem on them. Maybe this is a different type?

Thanks Zack. I had some clove polyps before and they had a long stem on them. Maybe this is a different type? Just googled it and I think you're right.....at least the pics look like what I have. Thanks again!

Hmmm I've seen some corals like zoanthids raid their stalks and lower based on their conditions but not quite sure if it's the same with cloves, very pretty coral though!

Thanks again Zack! Just finished reading about blue clove polyps and glad I did. What an invasive coral! Not in my tank.....lol

+1 on the blue cove polyp. I had orange clove colony in last tank and they are petty close in resemblance.

If you are going to nuke that rock, make sure you really nuke it. Looking at the photo, it looks like bryopsis on the rock as well. You're going to have to use Hydrogen Peroxide to weaken the stuff and then try and let your rock take a vinegar bath for a couple of hours. I picked some up a long time ago off a frag plug and it went crazy in my old setup. It will was still doing well in my 40 breeder grow out tank but after dosing with Tech M to a 1800+ Mg and doing some serious scrubbing of the rocks with H2O2, the stuff seems to have taken a hit. I still see traces of it in spots I really cant get to but its at bay for now. Just need to keep my nutrients low.

Thanks for the advice Justin. The guy I bought the tank from hadn't done a water change in over 2 years. It took an hour to clean the glass enough so I could see through it. Lots of time cleaning and getting all sorts of nasty things out of the tank. It'll end up being worth it though.

Yeesh, vinegar bath the tank will help breakup the calcium deposits and corralline in the tank
