I'm looking/thinking about getting equipment together for my 40 breeder. I only have a protein skimmer which is a SSA ES5. I'm planning on getting AI hydros or vegas, and Ecotech mp10's. I'm not sure what return pump I will need or anything else. This is my second tank first one was a bust. I'm also wondering if my protein skimmer is too big for a 40B and if it is what is a good one to go with.

Good luck with your new setup. What happened to your first tank? Why was it a bust?

Crappy sump , tank was drilled wrong and a circulation pump that gave me headaches. When I got the tank it already had a 2in hole drilled in it.

I'd go with the biggest skimmer that will fit in your sump while also remaining within your budget.

Looking at the specs it only has a 18w pump? If that is true you should have no problem with heat, the foot print looks fairly small, so I would use the skimmer
