View Full Version : Preferred method of Dosing

Alright guys. I wanted to make this thread to get an opinion from the group on what they do to dose in their tanks. I myself have tried the following so far:

Kalkwasser: Great for very simple Alk and Ca and keeping my pH at the right level. The problem is the precipitate that comes from dosing it through your ATO into your sump. I would start to slowly get a Ca buildup in the chamber where I dosed the ATO/Kalk effluent into my return area. As long as I religiously cleaned my return, I was good but the eventual build up always had me worried. Not to mention the buildup would look unsightly in my sump.

BRS 2 part: I am currently dosing this way for my large tank but I find that it constantly needs adjusting and you need to find dosers to dose the different parts. I currently dose them with the BRS 1.1 ml dosers and my Apex fusion. Thank God for the various help sites on programming the dosers to get the daily dose you need. Not as easy as Kalkwasser but I like the idea of being able to dial in my Alk and Ca. In my tank, my Alk depletes much faster than Ca in my tank. In this situation, Kalk would no longer work for me as Kalk is rumored to dose equal amounts of Alk and Ca, which in my tank would slowly raise my Ca to levels unfavorable for my frags.

Ca Reactor: This is the next level I would like to get in. I like how it seems like it doses equal parts Alk and Ca but also trace elements that the corals need and makes the them readily available to corals. In fact, it probably doses the right ratio of Alk and Ca for corals since all I'm doing is liquefying coral skeletons so that corals can make new skeletons. The cost is a huge deterrent but since I have a spare CO2 tank from my planted days, I'm halfway there!

What are you thoughts and issues with the various ways to dose in your tank?

Seems like that is the normal progression. Kalk, 2 part, then reactor.

I do a calcium reactor and Kalk top off to bring my PH back up once the Reactor brings it down. It levels out nicely and my corals love it.

I'm currently doing kalk in my ATO and 2 Part(C-balance). However I just ordered a calcium reactor for my new tank I'm building out and plan on using it in combination with Kalk.

I would agree with you Greg. I guess its due to the level of involvement and initial funds available.

Anyone have any thoughts, pros, cons, issues with the various ways of Dosing?

Kalk will eventually blow your pump 2 part mega expensive and reactor up front cost and complexity of some are scary

I've been using kalk in my ato and has been working well. I also add a bit of vinegar and magnesium in my ato to keep mag levels where I want them. Seems to work well. Never had a problem with precipitate in my sump though.

Through the last 11 years with this system I've gone full circle. Starting with 2 part CaCl and baking soda with Kalk ATO. Then I moved to a Calcium Reactor for a number of years. Then in Feb. 2008 I got a Gigas clam and the Calcium Reactor couldn't keep up with the new calcium demand placed on the system. So I moved back to CaCl and baking soda, and Kalk ATO. I now dissolve 3 cups of BRS CaCl and 3 cups of baking soda in 2-2.5 gallon containers once a week.

I started with Kalk using BRS dosing pump controlled by my Apex. Then I switched to 2Part dosing using jebao dp4. So far so good.

Sounds good Francis. I still use my BRS 2 part with BRS dosing pumps. I'm thinking about moving over to a Ca Reactor after seeing the growth that Mike is getting on his tank. From what I can tell, it also does the trace elements that the corals need as well. Now I'm doing some research on the best reactors and watch outs with using a Reactor.

Anybody have any thoughts on some potential watch outs?
