Years ago I kept an Octopus, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It got to know my wife and I quite well. It was extraordinary to watch it respond and interact with us. It would put it tentacles out of the tank as if to shake our hands. They are so intelligent but unfortunately the Caribbean species doesn't live very long. It was hard for me when he died. That's probably why I haven't kept another one in 20 years. I am thinking about setting up a small species tank for my children to enjoy. Give me some ideas please...

Any species tank will do: Seahorse, Mantis, Cuttlefish ect.

Cuttlefish are awesome but they don't live very long. Go with a nautilus instead, way cooler. When I was a kid in s Cali, an lfs had one and it was so cool to see

I've always been fascinated with the nautilus. From what I've read they are a deep water species, and a chiller is required for success. Is this correct?

That is what I was reading too. I also read that they are very slow and can not be kept with other fish (too slow and they eat other fish). Also, I think they would not like very much light. I read from one post they can get kinda boring to watch after a few minutes.

I guess it depends on the size tank you choose. Angler/frogfish could be cool

I know I loved my stingray/shark tank when I had it. Had her for about a year and a half before she sliced her belly open and didn't recover. That was hard on the kids and I both...haven't had one since.

I wanted one too but unless I turn my tub in the bathroom into a tank, then its not gonna happen lol.

How big of a tank are you wanting to set up? How about a sexy shrimp tank. Get them trained and the kids can hand feed them. Later on you could always add a fish or two if you wanted.

P.S. They are compatible with dwarf seahorses, although you would need a continuous supply of live food for the dwarfs. Newborn sexy shrimp also eat BBS and the dwarfs will eat them.

Years ago I had a Leopard shark for a while. It grew from 7ish" to over 2 feet within a year. It would circle the tank all day, and became a friend to a large Panther grouper. Unfortunately the shark died while I was trying to donate it to a much larger aquarium. What an awesome creature it was. I would hold shrimp above the surface of the water and watch him come out of the water and grab it. I have never kept a stingray. That is something I would like to try some day with a very large system.

I was talking to Gary about this the other day. He was telling me that the Maxi Mini anemone will host Sexyshrimp. That would be a fun system with tones of color. My boys would love for me to set up a seahorse tank. I had a friend who had probably 20 dwarf seahorses he raised in his refugium. I might entertain this in the future.

My wife's Jawfish tank, the only tank I can spend money on and she does not have a problem. (Glad she doesn't get on MAAST, and why MAAST needs to stay away from FB)

I love Jawfish. Sadly, I can't have one because my yellow watchman would get really upset and since he was my very first SW fish when I moved here to Texas, he wins.
