July 2015 through November 2015 MAAST Coral Grow-out Competition
The BOD here at MAAST are all very excited to bring you the July 2015 through November 2015 MAAST Coral Grow-out Competition! Once again we will be having three coral categories. Soft Coral, Large Polyp Stony Coral, and Small Polyp Stony Coral.
The rules for this competition are:
1. To be eligible for this competition you must be a Junior Member, Charter Member, or Moderator (Board of Directors may enter the contest towards the end of the sign up deadline but WILL NOT be eligible for prizes). We highly encourage any and all interested web members to visit our Home page to learn how to become a supporting member of MAAST and become a Charter Member ( http://www.maast.org/content.php?2-About-us )
2. Reply to this thread with an "I am in for (categories)". In that post you are required to give a detailed description of the tank set up that you will be utilizing to grow out the coral frag(s).
3. The deadline to sign up will be Friday July 10th. To expedite your payment PayPal is available. Make sure you include your screen name, real name, email, home address, phone number and portions of the competition that you are entering in the "add a note" box on the PayPal screen. Send your PayPal payment to : treasurer@maast.org Once you have submitted your payment please send a PM to me ( Dean ) to let us me it has been made so that your spot(s) in this competition can be updated as paid and secured by you. Cash will also be accepted and arrangements to meet one of the BOD members can be made to accept those payments.
4. This competition has a reserved amount of 45 spots to be spoken for. Each participant is initially allowed to sign up for as many as one spot in each category. If on the last day of the deadline there are remaining open spots and you wish to enter multiple frags into the competition then you can pay the entry fee on additional frags and enter them into the competition.
5. Each member that has signed up for this competition will have 7 calendar days up to July 10th to make full payment for the spots spoken for. If payment has not been made within those 7 days the spots will be back open to all other members interested in signing up. If you miss the 7 day window you will have to wait for another open spot to sign up. You will be ineligible to refill the spot that you vacated. Once all spots are spoken for the sign ups will be closed. Our goal is for this competition to commence on July 11th.
6. We will be having an Educational Meeting on July 11th FROM 1:00 to 4:00 in which all of the frags will be passed out to our participating members. Special arrangements can be made with me and Dkray944 for those that live out of town and/ or may have to work or etc.. on that day.
7. You are required to start your own grow-out thread titled as such "(screen name's) July 2015 CGOC thread"
8. It is required for all participating members to post frequently in their own CGOC threads through out the duration of the competition. The input as to your husbandry techniques in maintaining and growing these beautiful species will be a great educational tool for anyone interested in maintaining them. It is equally important to post any problems that you may have encountered in keeping them. While this is going to be a fun and entertaining competition, the higher purpose is to educate ourselves, our fellow members, and the general public in the successful husbandry practices of these three beautiful species of corals. Your personal CGOC threads will also be the tools of the competition judges in comparing the growth of the frags. The better the quality of the photos that you post the easier it will be for our judges to determine the category winners. Post photos as often as you would like to but at no less interval than 2 weeks. If you post your initial photo and then not another one until you have 6 new polyps, or 4 new eyes, or complete frag plug encrustation then you may be disqualified by default. Post photos often! I can't reiterate that enough.
Competition Judging
Category 1 - Palythoa
The palythoas will first be judged by the number of polyps to include baby polyps. If the number of polyps does not determine the winner then the visual health of the coral will be evaluated. Lastly, if the visual health of the coral does not determine the winner then the coloration of the coral will be evaluated.
Category 2 - Chalice
The chalice will first be judged by the number of eyes. If the number of eyes does not determine the winner then the circumference of the coral will be measured. If the circumference of the coral does not determine the winner then the coloration of the coral will be evaluated.
Category 3 - Acropora
The acropora will be judged by the circumference of encrustation (new growth) on the frag plug. If the circumference of the encrustation on the frag plug does not determine the winner then the over all length of the branches of the coral will be evaluated. If the over all length of the branches does not determine the winner then the coloration of the coral will be evaluated.
In the event that a tie has occurred the top contestants will continue in the competition. The frags will be judged at the end of each week until the 1st place frag can be determined.
In the spirit of full transparency we want to give you our budget for this competition so that you can see where your entry fee money is going. Yes this years CGOC entry fees have gone up by $5.00 per frag which is a necessary evil to fund the competition. The frag/ prize package pricing is as follows: AquaSD 15 chalice frags, 15, acropora frags, two $100 gift cards, and shipping from California totals to $930.00. Pham's 15 palythoa frags and $100 credit to the winner totals to $300. The total cost to the club comes to $1,230.00. Hoping we get 45 entry fees paid at $25.00 per entry will cover $1,125.00. Last year the competition brought in a few new charter members as well as a few renewals which would again make up the remainder of the club costs to host this competition. So sign up for at least one category and help us make this a successful event so that we can continue putting these events on for you!
Without further ado MAAST in conjunction with a couple of our very generous sponsors AquaSD and Air, Water, & Ice and one generous charter member Phamily proudly presents our three coral categories!

I am in for all 3! I have a 125 gallon oceanic (I think) tank with 2 Koralia pumps, 2 stage sump (chaeto, coralife protein skimmer, and biopellet reactor), lighting from 100w reeftorch and Radion gen2, in tank uv sterilizer, and gonna start water changes with instant ocean reef salt. I will be dosing Kalk in some form or fashion (probably drip method).
This will be new for me since all these frags are new types for me.
Is there a way to see if pm's go through because I send them and there is no indication? Also I have trouble with this site with typing. I type and a lot of the letters do not pop up. I have to press keys several times for them to work.

Talk about some great frags! I have the radion acro from AquaSD and it's one of my favorites. It's brightened up for me and shows some pretty good polyp extension. Looking forward to seeing who takes home the trophy for each category. This is going to be great.

To add to the spectacular deals that have flooded the forum, I have one more. Join the frag growing competition and receive a beautiful paly, chalice, or Acro frag for just 25 dollars. The only catch is you need to post pictures along the way to show us your propagating skills. Join the hunt to becoming the 2015 frag master with the entry into all three catagories. You could win a new 5 stage RODI unit which puts out a whopping 150 gph. :)

I didn't realize i was supposed to post a description of my setup to the thread as well.
For starters, I have a dual setup, 140g reef and a 20g frag tank plumbed to the same sump. I'm running black box 3w full spectrum leds on both tanks and the paly frag will most likely be in the frag tank unless i can find a good spot for it in my display tank. I transferred my 75g to the 140 so between it and the 140 itself, that setup has been going for over two years. on my 140, 60"L x 18"D x 30"H, there's at least 150 lbs or rock/ 120 lbs of sand and a variety of livestock( fish - sixline wrasse, yellow eye kole tang, vlamingii tang, sailfin tang, striped squirrelfish, yellow angel, coral beauty angel, blue spot watchman goby, lawnmower blenny, target mandarin, cuc - tigertail cuke, conch snail, nessarius snails, astrea snails, various hermit crabs, serpent stars, lps - 2 torches, 2 purple tip frogspawns, 2 purple tip hammers, orange wall hammer, gold hammer, 3 different octospawns, bicolor scuba steve, neon green tip scuba steve, red candy cane, 3 neon green candy canes, neon green hammer, encrusting gargonia, reg gsp, neon gsp, blue xenia, green hammer, sps - rainbow stylo, jf pink polyp stylo, purple style, blue digi, forest fire digi, purple flowerpot goni, birdsnest (pointy and yellow/green), screaming birdsnest, strawberry lemonade, garf bonsai, tricolor valida, a couple others i don't remember the name of, mushrooms - 2 different blue shrooms, watermelon shroom, i call it a green camo shroom, blue/green ricordia and a tube nem. I have a pretty efficient sump with floss filter coming in( i change weekly), goes into small fuge area with small led spot lamp, internal/external reef octopus skimmer, 9w uv, brs dual chamber reactor(currently running dual carbon but switch up when/if need to either gfo/carbon or phosphate sponge/carbon, mag9 return pump, manual float valve ato(hey it works), 300w heater, fan for cooling(i'm old school don't knock it....lol), 2 jaebo wp40's in tank for flow, auto feeder used with various pellet types and sizes). I think that's about it for the sump and display tank.
My frag tank 20g(roughly) - a few snails, lawnmower blenny, small mimic tang, looking for a sixline to go in as well, Zoas - punk rocker, twizzler, radiactive dragon eyes, red hornets, yellow hornet, greenbay packer, fire n ice, tubbs blue, king midas, rasta, bbeb, aog, blowpop, bambams, a few i can't remember the name of, Paly - red people eater, green people eater, aussie gold, 2 or 3 others i can't remember name of, Others - yellow dendro, yellow scroll, mello yellow cloves, orange leptastrea, blue with green center leptastrea, hollywood stunner chalice, tiny red goni frag. running an mj900 for return but may soon switch to rio 1100 and small circ pump for added flow.
Both tanks' lighting are on the same timer and most hardware is tied to an 8 outlet dj strip. I don't feed these all at once but i have on hand amuzed frozen, frozen mysis, frozen brine, frozen spirulina brine, roe, pellets(for auto feeder), reef chili, aquavitro fuel, phytoplankton and seaweed salad for my veggie clip.
I typically do water changes with rscp salt biweekly using ro/di water and regularly check my readings and adjust as needed. both tanks have a digital thermometer for more accurate temp reading. I try to maintain 1.025 - 1.026 salinity, ca between 400 and 450, alk about 12ish, mg between 1300 and 1400, nitrate/nitrite very low to none, phosphate low, ammonia none and temp between 78 and 80. I have multiple suppliments on hand for reading adjustment as well as items to promote fish and coral health.
That's the just of my setup. open to comments/suggestions
Thanks in advance.

Going to open this up after tomorrow to any Board members that want to participate (BOD won't be eligible to win prizes but can compete if they wish). I won't be joining this round myself but am sure a few others will. The final number of frags needs to be given to the vendors by Thursday night so they can be shipped out on Friday. If you're interested then you better get signed up. :D

Sps and paly slots are very limited so the chance to get these nice frags is running short of time. We still have plenty of chalice frag slots open.

I just found out that I will be needing to pick up the palythoa frags in the morning so we are going to go ahead and open this up for Board Members and multiple entries. So today is the last day to sign up for the paly category.
The LPS and SPS frags are shipping out on Friday so tomorrow is the cut off for signing up for those categories.

Please put me down for the palys and radion acro. I have two systems I'll might be using. One is a 220g mixed reef that's sps dominate and the other is a separate 40g frag tank. They both contain overflows with sumps and skimmers. All of the lights are radions and the pumps are vortec mp40. I also regularly use carbon and gfo.

I am in for the Payls. The tank is part of a mini flow through system. A seahorse nursery tub flows into a acrylic tank, which is plumbed into a 46 gallon sump and a 60 gallon seahorse growout tank. Lighting with led's.

Dean, just throwing it out there that I personally would be perfectly happy if the board members who are competing were up for the prizes. I understand the conflicts of interest that could arise with a normal give away but with something as well documented via pics etc I think this would be mitigated. I just think they shouldnt be punished on this competition because they dedicate their time and energy to the club so we can have this contest. Obviously this would have to have unanimous agreement with all participants.
I think another way to mitigate bias would be have whomever decides the winner pick the top 4 or 5 from each category and open it up to a public vote from the competitors. That way a lot of people could put in their input and mitigate bias. Also could allow for overall factors of the completion other than strictly growth.
Just my 2 cents

I think your proposal is acceptable. If all of the participants are in full agreement then I'm good with it. I myself am not participating and will seek two other club members that also don't compete to finish out the judging panel so there won't be any direct bias as to the judging.
What's everyone else think?

I do not see an issue. Im competing to see what system works. Im too new at this and my tank is new even though I have moved all the rock from my 65 into this 125. I just want to learn. My equipment is changing and breaking in so im not expecting much. The frags were cheap but beautiful so its still a win for me. I would like to see the top aquariums compete no matter who owns them. Idk i dont care who wins the prizes. I just want the experience and lessons that we will learn. I know people will say i am crazy and they do not have to agree with my view point. No matter what there will always be haters. Lets just enjoy playing the game. Guaranteed we will learn or teach somebody something with all of us posting our biweekly photos and experiences.

I'm not a huge fan of board members being allowed for prizes, especially given previous Maast history.
With that being said, if all the participants are on board and agree, I defer my opinion to the democratic process.

For me it's definitely a plus, I would love to spend some money on frags I probably would not buy otherwise. And I do want the ro system so I can get rid of my Frankenstein system. But even if I come in last do long as I still have the corals I'll be all good.

anyways the point is if one of the board members wins and they can not receive a prize should the gift card be used to help fund the next competition or something. Is the only reason they are able to compete at all so that we have more people competing or what? Its not like the board have superior tanks in every way or something. I do not see the advantage.
Davie118
Wed, 8th Jul 2015, 10:54 PM
I need the gift cards as much as anybody but I still have been trying to get people to sign up. It seems like Maast has been losing money on a lot of events/meetings and I know that is what this next meeting is about. I for one am not gonna cry because the board who have been dedicating all their time setting meetings up, get something out of this.

Dean when I was on the Board, Board members could not win door prizes but they could participate in paid raffles. And I would think CGOC would follow along those lines? If there is any question or concern maybe move this to the Charter Member Forum for a vote.

Zack this was a LONG time ago and had absolutely nothing to do with anyone currently serving on the Board of Directors. It's time to stop persecuting the BOD for something another individual did years ago. There really isn't even a need to bring it up in the open forums again.
