View Full Version : Wake up MAAST!

Hello MAAST
This year the Board of Directors has been working hard to bring you several new programs, revamping old programs, gaining new sponsors as well as working with current sponsors which has allowed us to put together some great meetings with very nice raffles and door prizes. My question is.. WHERE ARE ALL OF OUR MEMBERS AT??? For the most part there are only a small handful of you who show up regularly to meetings and pretty much the same handful that participate in our online discussions. If we are unable to gain anymore interest in the club then we have up to this point, what is the purpose of the BOD spending so much of our volunteered time to bring these things to you? If MAAST is unable to garner anymore interest than it has so far this year, we are considering scaling back meetings to quarterly (only 2 more this year) and are going to stop dedicating so much of our time in putting together all of the programs and meetings. We are using the club's funds (your dues and sponsorship fees) to host these meetings and pay for the prizes and can no longer warrant using these funds if you don't come out to support the club.
How about all of the members who have been with MAAST for years but only ever lurk in the shadows and never join any conversation? What is keeping you from posting? If there is something you would like to see done differently, something you would like to no longer see, or something not being done that you would like to happen then throw it at us. If the present Board of Directors has offended you, put you off, or whatever it may be then throw it at us. If we don't hear it then we don't know it. If you care enough to sign in to the forum then care enough to post something somewhere and perhaps come to a meeting every now and then.
Seriously gang, if things don't start getting more active in the forum and more attendance at the meetings then we are just going to put it in cruise control and leave it to you guys to keep things going. It is exhausting doing all that we do just to hear crickets in the back ground.
Speak your mind!

I know I am new but I was looking forward to more meetings and getting more involved. This hobby is why I just got accepted to Texas state with a Aquatic biology major. I have 7 years aircraft experience and got tired of not loving what I was doing. We get to have a piece of the ocean in our living rooms and better yet we get to propagate corals and fish with the intent of keeping the hobby local and limit the export of species from the ocean. I am very interested in helping out however I can. That is my 2 cents! I look forward to any future meetings and hope we do not end up on cruise control with our passion gone.

I agree with Davie I enjoy going to the meetings and meeting new people and learning things or possibly different ways to view something. Also I think its a matter of convince that people are going other places like FB. I know for me, its easier to view and post stuff to FB. And like always I will host at my house if that can save us money and help our cause.

I completely echo Dean's comments when it comes to lack of participation both on the forum and in person at events. I also will be the first to say that I could definitely do more in both areas and hope to be more active. For me I remember a few years ago when I wouldn't be on the site for a few hours there could be 2 pages of threads that had been posted on. Now it might be 2 threads, and that's kind of disheartening to both the poster's and the "lurkers". Overall I don't think that the traffic on the site has dropped off that much, it undeniably has some but not that much. I think if the lurkers (myself included) posted on a couple threads a day that would be a huge improvement. Because then more people would feel comfortable and compelled to post and create new threads if they knew they were being read and their time spent taking pictures and posting is appreciated.
So I personally am committing to posting on at least an average of 1 thread a day (outside of the for sale forum as that not why this site exits). Who else is with me? Let's get this site rocking!

Davie we will be talking about this at our next Board meeting which will coincide with the member meeting this July 11th. The Board meetings are open to all Charter Members so feel free to come out and voice your opinions or concerns.

Just a friendly reminder that if you want to have meetings more than once a quarter, Either talk to Dean or come to the meeting July 11th. Also poke a friend and get them all fired up about aquariums so we can grow as a community. That is all!
p.s. Nobody likes the lone reefer. So share your reef with somebody!

Well I plan to be on everything once I move to San Antonio, I had a severe family emergency that I've been dealing with this month, plus I'm finishing up writing my dissertation, then looking for a house in SA. Once I get there I'll there are a couple things I can promise
1. Never gonna give you up
2. Never gonna let you down
3. Never gonna run around and dessert you
4. Never gonna make you cry
5. Never gonna say good bye
6. Never gonna tell and lie and hurt you
I'll pick up members and let them ride on my bike's handle bars if they need a ride.

Well said. That is the way I feel and what this hobby is about. It is about sharing, caring and imparting knowledge. I may fail at times and at other times succeed. Without the help of others I would have had no chance at all.
