I have always been a high fancy gadget person and tried every thing possibly available in market for the reef tank . With my current tank I told my self stay simple and it'll be a less headache . So my current system have only been running with an over sized skimmers me with NO gfo or carbon or any thing else also no refugium . Three weeks ago my red dragon pump feeding the skimmer died giving me a heart attack and costed my 700$ to replace. How ever it was back order for 3 or 4 weeks . After two weeks of tank running skimmer less I noticed no change in water chemistry as far as nutrients and corals maintained their color . However colors are not the best but ok since I run mostly whites in my t5s . Growth has been normal or bit better . Feeding regime has been same which I call it heavy feeding of variety food. The only thing I do is 4gln water change per week on my this 50gln system . I am very happy running this skimmer less tank now going on 4th week and I already cancelled the order of my red dragon pump and decided to run it as it is now . Maybe in coming month I will be adding a fuge just for a better PH and some marine pure blocks for the natural filtration since I have room now and the display only has 15lbs of rock total with very small sand bed .

Over all really happy . Colors couldn't been better but I am not chasing the colors now . Growth has been good

I have been running my 29 gallon skimmer less for a little over a year now. Fairly heavy bio load and heavy feeding also. It is a mixed reef but only just a couple of weeks ago have I introduced and sps which is a nice birds of paradise mini colony I got from David. It has acclimated nicely and is doing well. I'm think about introducing an acro colony to see how it will do. The tank runs with virtually no nuisance algae also. It has been running for a little over two years now and I couldn't be happier with it. I do change out water weekly though and would likely not be nearly as successful with it otherwise. One other thing is that I do also run carbon. So many different types of coral including an anemone is asking for chemical warfare so I run carbon to be safe. I introduce phosban in the reactor as well when the po4 levels get out of hand.

Smaller tanks can get by without because of the large water changes. My wife's 20 gallon after substrate coral and rock is probably 10 gallons, so after a 6 gallon water change I am removing a bunch of pollutants from the water column. On my 300 I still use a 12 year old Urchin Pro, which by many standards is out dated and too small.
