Are Traditional cycles a thing of the past?

With recent advancements in the aquarium hobby, particularly in the "bacteria in a bottle" area, do you think the days of traditional cycling are over?


Personally, I've used Dr. Tims quick start bacteria along with the instant ocean brand to start my last 4 tanks and all went exceptionally well.


I haven't seen an "old school" cycle in months on both Maast and Nanoreef, old school being the addition of concentrated ammonia or table shrimp etc.. So I'm wondering if it's slowly phasing out as new, faster methods to begin stocking become available.

Actually I'm in the process of cycling my DT right now. How quickly were you able to add livestock after using the Dr. Tims quick start?

In my 40 breeder and 8 gallon instantly. You need an ammonia source for the method to work successfully.

Almost like buyig something on credit. You can either save up for however long to pay cash, or finance it and have instant gratification. I think with all the advancements that most people choose the instant

When I set up a new tank I use established liverock and 50% old water from my 300. No need for a major cycling. On my QT tanks I keep a foam filter in my 300 for biological load, after the QT I wash in the washing machine and back into my 300 sump again for next time

Fritz pro turbo start is also a great product for a quick cycle... It's sold refidgeratated and does have a shelf live. Used it with carribsea Aragalive sand products and you can usually add livestock the same week.

I just use a rock or two live rock and stock slowly. I like to add different denitrifying bacteria though to give me diversity.
