I thought I read you would have to set up your tan and let it run before adding rock and fish.
Is there anything I would need to do if I buy a new tank?
What steps do I need to take?

Live Rock is a good way to cycle your new tank. In the past I always put the sand, live rock, and a damsel in to cycle a tank. These days you can also add bacteria to the water to escalate the cycling process.

I would add the bacteria, it's much faster. I've done it both ways, but whichever way you decide just remember to be patient. Always monitor your water parameters, and don't overstock when first starting out.
Add a good hydrometer
Heater
Nitrate test kit
What type of filtration
Lighting
Location of tank is important
Good luck

I decided not to upgrade the entire tank. The one I have now is fine. I will upgrade the lights so I can add dif coral and I want to look into a refugium. Would have to be pretty small. Custom built maybe...
I also want to get a pair of clowns and a BTA. Maybe some more shrimp too.
