Any reefers had ever experienced this . My tank has ultra low nutrients with 0 PO4 and minimum nitrates . I am dealing with red slime algae from last month or so maybe because of lack in husbandry as I am always out but I do do water changes religiously and that's doesn't seem to help . It has killed my nice blasto colony and affecting my Sps . I am leaving out of town again over the weekend and a bit concern now .I have never ran carbon or any other filter source besides protein skimmer and now thinking about running active carbon or maybe but hate to use the product called red slime remover . Any thoughts

Chemiclean is a better product. Follow directions carefully.

If you are dosing amino acids it could cause this. If so I would reduce the aminos dose.

When you say ultra low nutrient do you mean zeo? Zeo works by promoting good bacterial growth but unfortunately the pellets also feed cyanobacteria. That could be a reason why you are seeing it. Chemiclean is an antibiotic so it's bound to affect your good bacterial population. From my experience a 3day blackout is the safest way to get rid of cyano.

I have used the antibiotic erythromycin, found as the active ingredient in fish meds at big box pet stores, to rid my low nutrient nano tank of cyano and it has not come back and did not cause a crash of my system. After long research, I found that erythromycin does not bond to the tanks "beneficial bacteria".

A little carbon wouldn't be a bad idea. If you dose amino acids this could be a cause too...whenever I dose the zero amino acid I typically get a little algae bloom and my skimmer pulls a little nastier stuff out. I'd run some carbon before using any of the miracle potions...

I've used both Chemiclean and erythromycin. Both are decent choices. But I'd recommend some big water changes.

Chemi clean did a great job. However I only used two scoops for 45gln tank more and less and now running carbon aggressively and will replace carbon after couple days and a 10gln water change . Plan is to change carbon ever couple days for a week and water change every couple days till I achieve a 100% water change.

80% algae is all gone . Still have some spots on sand will siphon it out during water change
