Just curious to see who else here doing SPS dominated tank? There used to be a lot on here, but seem like fewer now days. I have a 240g SPS dominated

I'm mostly sps...but do have a massive clam and a few LPS and zoas. I'd say I'm 80% SPS

Just saw your DT in the other forum and it looks awesome. How old and how big is it? Looks like you'll need to upgrade already....I miss that clam.

DT is 144 gallon half circle...been setup a few years. The contents were transferred from generations of prior tanks. I'm pretty much running out of room. Some of the larger SPS colonies really take up a bunch of space...and that clam takes up a HUGE spot. I got the clam from Troy Valentine...I'm not sure who alls tanks it has been through. I think mark had it, Troy had it, but I'm not sure who before that. She's really big now!

When I first setup my 300 I started looking at SPS dominate, but the last couple years I decided to let everyone one fend for themselves like in the ocean. Some of the SPS colonies have found away to stay ahead of the LPS and even GSP which normally takes over SPS and kills it.

My 20 long and 90 is sps only, but I'm thinking about maybe making the 90 slightly mixed, maybe 80% sps long term.

In the past I've had a pretty mixed 220g tank but have been going more sps lately. Once they grow out I'll probaly be around 70% Sps or more.

I'm on the hunt for ora pearlberry. Apparently ora stopped selling it. Let me know if anyone has a frag.

That Pearlberry is awesome. I was going to originally go all SPS and zoas but my addiction got the better of me and I have about 5 LPS pieces. Mainly Euphyellia as I like the flow they demonstrate.

I have a 420 with mostly SPS, and Anemones, a few LPS and two or three soft corals, and a Huge 28 inches clam. I guess it is a mix reef but mostly SPS

28" clam ? bet it consumes a lot of calcium. That is one GIANT.

I'm trying sps not having much luck. Not sure what's going on but all my frags look terrible except my garf bonsai that frag still looKs good. If they all die like seems to be whats happening I'll probably stick with lps and softies

Is that the same Gigas you got in early 2013? It was just 15" then now its 28" that's amazing growth!!! What is your dosing regiment like? It took me almost 7 years for my Gigas to go form 11" to 24".

Troy, whenever I am in town, I love to come by and see your Gigas. My sister in law living NW San Antonio also.

Yep, most people run led now. I'm happy with my good ol halides

Troy is that stag to the right of the clam the one you got from me years ago?

No that is a Seaworld frag. I think I got more than one stag from you. If it was the Formosa it turned into a large colony, then fell over into my green Mille colony while I was on vacation. By the time I got home it was too late.

Here is the stag I got from you before it fell into the Mille. (It is the one to the left of the green Mille)

Darn, was hoping too get a frag back from you. That stag was a monster in my tank. It grew faster than any other coral in my tank. Had it baking right under an xm 10k 250w

I think I have a frag of it. If you want? Was it teal with light blue tips?

It was brown with purple tips. I'll take a frag of any stag :)

Pictures don't do Troy's tank justice. The first time I went to his place I went home depressed about the size of my sps. Everything is bigger than you could imagine. Troy is a wealth of knowledge and has an outstanding reef.

I am getting ready to do a new tank with SPS. I have Halides on my 210g and am wondering if anyone on this thread has went from Halides to LED's. I have read a lot of different opinions on this topic but still having a hard time deciding which direction to go.

Why not use both? With the size of your new tank it maybe your best option?

Alton,

I think you are right. Now to figure out the best balance.

Would really love to do a sps tank but my wife won't let me buy another tank until our next house. Maybe I can win one in a raffle. Technically I wouldn't be buying it. Lol. But seriously I want to do one dosing vinegar. I've read great things about it and want to give it a try. I'm running biopellets on my big tank and am 90% happy so far. I have a small patch of cyano but will switch to ecobak plus when these brs pellets are done.

What are yall using to keep up with calcium demand for all those sps?

Bubble Magnus dosing pump. I use ecobak plus bio pellets and don't have cyano at all. I used just ecobak before and had lots of cyano. Just my experience

Troy,
I think either I did a typo or you missed read somewhere. When I first got the clam, it was just under 2 feet. Over the last 2 years he added about 2.5 inches of shell on each end so I guess he is around 26-28 inches or so.

I am slowly converting to Sps dominate tank . Sand bed full of Lps and rics . And got two 2 rocks one has bubble tips anemones and other will be full sps . However I like the idea of growing then on frag racks . After that red slime algae problem I transformed all my Sps to frag rack and they all are growing pretty rock don't know why by they encrusting already over the plugs in pretty fast pace
