Hello all

I'm in the process of dumping my LEDs and going MH/T5. The Giesemann Spectra fixtures don't come with ballasts. Is that only for the MH portion or do the T5s need ballasts too?

Ya, Im not crazy about the hydra.

i have both vega and hydra, I prefer the vega.

Why not add t5s to the hydra? im running 2 4' t5s along side my vega's and growth is good.

And to answer your original question, yes T5s need ballast

It has internal ballast for T5's and external ballast for MH. Am using an Infiniti 72" now on mine 240g.

Does this set up eliminate the shadowing on the SPS that LED's cause? I run LED's and the under side of the colonies are all lacking color. My next go around is going to be LED and something else hybrid for sure.

My boss has a 48" moonlight came with T10 Lamps and two 250w MH. The ballast for both where in the fixture. The was a separate box that transformed 120v to European power and then to the fixture. This fixture is 14 years old and still works, the moonlight is awesome with a 5w incandescent lamp that dims and follows the 28 days of the moon. It also comes with an internal meter that tells you when to change the lamps, and al programming is in the fixture. I think he paid like $2800 from Alamo Aquatics in 2000. Hope you get your fixture working, just guessing but if the light fixture is heavy I would say both ballast are built in.

I remember seeing your setup. The AOG colony was awesome! What light were you using on your refugium?

When I fragged the tabling acros they were almost white on the underside where the light doesn't get directly to them. I am sure this is something that the LED companies are looking to solve. For now they are producing these hybrid set ups but man they are expensive.

Add a BML XB 12K to the mix, the one I put on the wife's tank is so bright there are no shadows, the Yellow Head Jawfish has to wear sunglasses

My question was answered by email. The Spectra comes with the T5 ballast included; however, it does not come with the external metal halide ballasts.
