View Full Version : growth comparison question

I apologize if this has already been covered somewhere...but is the SPS category being judged by difference or change in growth from the start or is being judged by absolute or overall final size? The reason I ask is that there are several sps frags that had more than one branch and while others had only a single branch. I guess the same holds true for the zoa category since not all frags started with the same number of polyps.

I left the meeting early so I apologize if this was already addressed.

Thanks

Forget growth, mine was pretty much bleached out.....

It will be a task to get it back, then I'll worry about growth

Well i would assume that they can take in consideration where it started and what it ended up at because we are posting pictures every week to 2. Is that a good suggestion?

It will be judged from your first picture that you place on MAAST. Personally I will be using the plug as a ruler from the first picture to the last one you take. I am open to suggestions if anyone has a better way. I realize on SPS frags not all where going to be the exact same size. If two contestants corals are close in growth, we will do a road trip to compare

To all concerned

All things considered Minh did a good job of fragging his acro for the competition. Unless you are just fragging the 1/4- to maybe 1/2" tips, getting 20 frags the exact same size and shape would be near impossible without breaking off the tiny branches. and possibly killing the frag. All of you sps vets know that you can get significantly faster growth depending on your water quality, lighting, flow, feeding habits, and etc.. so any small disparity in the exact size or shape of the acro frag really will not have a bearing on the outcome of the competition by the end of the 4th month in my opinion.

As far as the palythoa, I was in a hurry while bagging them and didn't realize that there was a bag marked "4 polyp frags x 2". I will go back through all of the photos when everyone gets posted and find them to see what we can do to bring those frags back to 3. After reading his CGOC thread I see that one of them was entered into the competition by nanoreefer11 who has paid the entry fee but is NOT eligible for any of the prizes should he place in the top three. I will find the other frag and see what I can work out with that participant. Perhaps one of the polyps will be easily removed.

The last thing that I want to see come of this contest are unhappy members who feel they did not get a fair shake. So if anyone feels like they may want to step back out of this round then please contact me through PM or text if you have my number so that we can come up with a resolution that keeps everyone smiling.

Please keep in mind that we are having this event for all of you and doing the best that we can to make it enjoyable, educational, and as fair as possible. I hope this to be just the first of many Coral Grow Out Competitions of this caliber that we hold. So please, ideas and feed back are highly encouraged and welcomed.

This is going to be cool to watch the different growth rates...I'll be curious to see if there are trends with certain lighting (led vs mh etc...). Alton and Dean thanks for the clarification.

the thing that should have also been covered on mounting the SPS is how it should be mounted. I mounted my straight up (vertically) but some mounted them horizontally. That will affect growth in terms of height vs coverage/ encrusting.

User preference. We did cover it at the meeting. :)

As long as it is on the plug it came with it can be vertical or horizontal. At the meeting the restriction was that it cannot be removed from its orginal plug as the plug will be used for judging.

cool. one thing though. right wrong or other to place it in my tank I cut off the shank. the disc is there where it is mounted to, just cut off the shank.

I believe Ben Paul and Alton agreed that cutting the stem of the frag plug was acceptable.

Update..... BlueKoran91 had the other Paly frag with more than 3 polyps. She has cut it back to 3 and will be posting photos in the next day or two. So we should be good. :)
