November 2014 through February 2015 MAAST Aquacultured Coral Grow-out Competition
The BOD here at MAAST are all very excited to bring you the November 2014 through February 2015 MAAST Aquacultured Coral Grow-out Competition! This go around we will be having three coral categories. Soft Coral, Large Polyp Stony Coral, and Small Polyp Stony Coral.
The rules for this competition are:
1. You must be a Junior Member, Charter Member, Moderator, or a Board Member to be eligible for this competition. We highly encourage any and all interested web members to visit our Home page to learn how to become a supporting member of MAAST and become a Charter Member ( http://www.maast.org/content.php?2-About-us )
2. In your registration post you are required to give a detailed description of the tank set up that you will be utilizing to grow out the coral frag(s).
3. Sign ups will be open until ALL open spots are spoken for and paid for in full. To expedite your payment PayPal is available. Make sure you include your screen name, real name, email, home address, phone number and portions of the competition that you are entering in the "add a note" box on the PayPal screen. Send your PayPal payment to : treasurer@maast.org Once you have submitted your payment please send a PM to me ( clownfitch ) to let me know it has been made so that your spot(s) in this competition can be updated as paid. Cash will also be accepted and arrangements to meet one of the BOD members can be made to accept those payments.
4. This competition has a reserved amount of 60 spots to be spoken for. Each participant is allowed to sign up for as much as one spot in each category.
5. Each member that has signed up for this competition will have 7 calendar days to make full payment for the spots spoken for. If payment has not been made within those 7 days the spots will be back open to all other members interested in signing up. If you miss the 7 day window you will have to wait for another open spot to sign up. You will be ineligible to refill the spot that you vacated. Once all spots are spoken for the sign up will be closed. Our goal is for this competition to commence on November 9, 2014.
6. We will be having an Educational Meeting on November 9th FROM 1:00 to 4:00 in which all of the frags will be passed out to our participating members. Special arrangements can be made with me for those that live out of town and/ or may have to work or etc.. on that day.
7. You must check in on this thread on a frequent basis to give updates as well as photos when requested.
8. It is highly encouraged for all participating members to post frequently in this thread through out the duration of the competition. The input as to your husbandry techniques in maintaining and growing these beautiful species will be a great educational tool for anyone interested in maintaining them. It is equally important to post any problems that you may have encountered in keeping them. While this is going to be a fun and entertaining competition, the higher purpose is to educate ourselves, our fellow members, and the general public in the successful husbandry practices of these three beautiful aquacultured species of corals.
9. While these coral frags are yours to keep, the sell of the coral will not be allowed on the MAAST Forums. The ONLY exceptions to this rule is the member that donated as well as our Sponsors. If however, you want or need to remove it from your aquarium we do highly encourage the donation to our Frag Exchange as well as trading amongst fellow members.
Competition Judging
Category 1 - Palythoa will be judged by the number of polyps to include baby polyps.
Category 2 - Goniopora will be judged by the number of polyps.
Category 3 - Acropora will be judged by the length of all branches. In the even of a tie then the circumference of the coral encrustation on the frag plug will be measured. In the event that there remains a tie then the coloration of the coral will be the determining factor.
In the event that a tie has occurred after the top tied contestants will continue in the competition. The frags will be judged at the end of each week until the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place frags can be determined.
Without further ado MAAST in conjunction with a few of our very generous sponsors and one very gracious member proudly presents our three coral categories!

Hello all, Though I am supper new to all this again after about 6 years out of the hobby I would like to join this competition. Please let me know where to be to meet to receive the frags anyways I am supper excited to join this an possibly make some friends. I like SPS corals but want to dabble in LPS. or can I do both? I have a 90 Gallon Drilled Tank with about a 20 or 25 gallon sump maybe more not sure. For Lights I have 2 X IA Aqua Blues and MP40 for the current. I been using B-Ionic to dose the tank. I don't know if this is a great way but, its working at the moment looking for help will take any and all advice. Let me know if I can do both LPS & SPS and I will send out the money.

So how are we judge the Acro? Size? How do we determine one colony is better (bigger) than the other? What about coloration is that going to be taken into account?
OrionN
Wed, 8th Oct 2014, 09:36 AM
I think the Zoa and the Goniopora, it is easy to judge. Just count the number of polyps. It is going to be harder for the Acro. I think we may just appoint someone to be the judge and give guyline but let him/her take the heat for the subjective quality of judging.

Alright, all paid for and signed up. As per requested here is what I plan to have the frags grow with:
Tank: 7 gallon Acrylic Frag Tank
Sump: 10 gallon glass tank I had laying around
Heater: Jaber Heater
Skimmer: Bubble Magus Nac 3.5
Lighting: Yet to be determined but I have a Fluval Sea Nano lighting. I might go with a mini Halide light
Dosing: I will dose kalk via my ATO and replenish Trace during water changes, which will happen weekly or bi-weekly (basically when I get off my lazy butt)
Because I bought a frag of the Zoa for the contest a month prior, I will have my current frag and the contest frag in the same picture for every update to show that I am playing honest.

So your frag will be grown in the same system that the donor colony came from? I'd imagine it should grow very well if that is the case. Your Cali, OBT, and milli frags look great btw.
Dean
Fri, 10th Oct 2014, 01:58 PM
The sps frags that he donated came out of his work tank that's in the top picture of the sps category thread. So not the same system. :)
OrionN
Fri, 10th Oct 2014, 04:00 PM
The colony is from my 65 gal office system. I never check chemistry in that tank. Only get 20% water change monthly without fail. Use IO water so I am sure Ca and Alkalinity is low and likely low Magnesium also.
This colony is very hardy and grow fairly fast from 1 inche frag to the colony that size in 4 years or so despise bad Ca and Alkalinity. Salinity is always constant at 35 ppt. Temp is constant at 82 degree. It is right under my 250W DE MH
The frag that I grow for the contest will be given to Dean and then back to me so that it will go through the same stress as the other frags. I will not be the one that choose the frag. It will go into my home system which is completely different. I am sure that it will grow faster at home because it will have optimal water condition for SPS. I also fee my coral with small food. You can be sure that I will feed the Zoa and Goniopora daily, or almost daily. I will be fair, but I compete to win so watch out :)

All my big talk will likely jink me and my system will crash in the next 6 months :)

Please sign me up for all three. I have a 220 gallon mixed reef being lighted by 3 radion G2. I plan on growing the frags in my 70 inch sump that has a 20x19 frag tank built into it. The frag tank is lit by a radion xr15. As far as supplements I use fuel and phytoplex along with ATO with kalkwasser. Sometimes I will also add two part to keep levels in check.

I got to agree. The ORA Hardy Red Goniopora is such a beautiful coral. I am sure the frag itself is worth more than 20.00 entry fee. I bought my frag for 100.00. It had about 12 polyps instead of 6. It got to be one of the nicest LPS coral in my tank.

OrionN
Sun, 2nd Nov 2014, 02:19 PM
taken picture with a ruler is not always good. Where the coral in relation to the ruler, what lenses (wide angle or not) etc... make a big different in measurement. For SPS, may be we should weight the coral (that is if all the plug is the same weight, or else record the wight of the plug ahead.
I would recommend weight for the SPS. LPS and Zoa, count the number of polyps should be fine.
egardless, bring the coral to the meeting would be best. Those in Corpus or Austin may meet together and do the measurement.
Dean
Sun, 2nd Nov 2014, 02:35 PM
I definitely like the meeting idea and maybe even make it coincide with a frag trade. Just personal frag trade... With a pot luck lunch etc..
Zack
Sun, 2nd Nov 2014, 02:38 PM
I'd be worried for those who glue the frag down and it encrusts. A ruler edged up regardless of Camera and distance would suffice for measurements. I'd be worried about people losing their corals from undue stress of moving acclimating and moving in the same day.
Dean
Sun, 2nd Nov 2014, 02:45 PM
Frags get moved and shipped all of the time. No biggie.
Zack
Sun, 2nd Nov 2014, 02:46 PM
But moved put in a tank, adjusted to different lights for a few hours then moved again? National sites do these all the time, a ruler always works if it's pit next to the coral.

I would be nervous to bring the final growth to a meeting just because I'm relatively new with SPS and once its doing well in my tank I don't like to mess with it......

I get frags in Austin fairly frequently with no issues. Heck, coral is shipped all over the world. I understand not wanting to make the drive though. I drive 200 miles round trip at least three days a week and it does get old. I am waiting to hear back from two of our vets that I contacted to be our judging panel. When I get that buttoned up then they can come up with a plan that works for everyone. :)

SPS are hardy. Give ot pleny of water is a bucket and it would be fine for 6-12 hrs. The contest end in May so it will not be cold or hot so we will not have to worry about that. Keep the coral from excessive heat or cold and it will be fine. We routinely send Aquaculture corals in bag for 36 hrs with no problem.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself I want to say thank you to our sponsors who participated in this event. They gave MAAST some great deals on coral and prize packages. Thank you!
Another big thank you to the member that donated the sps frags, OrionN who at the meeting yesterday was extended an Honorary Lifetime Charter Membership. Thank you again Minh!
I also want to thank three of the pillars of our club who have graciously donated even more of their time to being our judging panel for this competition. Scutterborn, Alton, and Paul28. Thank you!
And of course last but certainly not the least, all of you who have chosen to participate in this competition. With out you we wouldn't be having the event. Thank you!
It was great putting faces to so many names and hanging out with you all yesterday. Thank you for coming out!
