I want to purchase some rock from a man down the street from me. He picked it up in rock springs,tx. That's all he has told me. It has been sitting in his yard for months. It is super poruse rock and I think it would be perfect for a tank! My question is. What are some of the issues that would arise from using this rock? I would definitly cure it before it sees any tank.

My biggest concern would be where did it came from. You don't want it to be regular rock that looks poruse and it ends up messing up your tank. Just some more questions. If it is good rock you should clean it really well maybe even boil it or acid wash it since it's been sitting outside.

I wouldn't use it. It might leach all sorts of stuff in your tank. Dry rock is cheap online I wouldn't risk it.

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning away from it. I can't boil it cause they are huge pieces. Prolly 3 feet long two feet wide and at least a foot tall. I wanted it for a future build I have in the works. He was gonna charge me 100$ for over a hundred pounds of rock

Yeah that's cheap but real reef dry rock online goes for nearly 2$/lb and offers you the peace of mind down the road. That's the direction I would go especially if it's for a future build. Id just wait a little extra and save up some more money and do it right.

Yea you guys are correct. I think I would rather have the peace of mind and a pest free tank then save a little bit of money.
