Hey everyone, so I am going to be moving I an apt in august. I'll be on the 4th story (have an elevator thank god) and am moving my 27 frag tank and 40 breeder which is all plumbed together.
Are there any best practices for moving tanks? Anyone have some do's and dont's? I will only be moving 4-5 miles down the highway and am moving stands and all equipment.
I know I have time but I'd like to try to come up with a game plan early so I'm not rushed out the door.
Thanks everyone!

Get plenty of 5G buckets and several small air pumps. Fish and corals can live in a 5G bucket for several days with an air pump. I have drained water down to sandbed and moved tanks less than 75G with 4' sand bed intact. This would be the least stressful for your established biological filter. Fish and corals with live rock would be in 5G buckets.
Good fortune on your move,

Do not disturb the substrate or be prepared to rinse it till it's clean.
5 gallon buckets work great for transporting livestock, get lids or make sure you only fill them half full of water so they don't splash and spill in the back of your vehicle.
Air pumps are necessary for keeping the livestock in buckets lived then a couple of hours. Also, put your live rock in a tub with water large enough to keep it submerged with a power head running.
Nano no heaters may also be necessary to keep temperature up.

It would be a good time to give your sand bed a good thorough cleaning unless perhaps your running a deep bed. I'd clean it up good if it were me though.

My sand bed is about 1inch deep, will cleaning it not start a cycle when I move it? I'm getting some people saying to clean and some people saying don't touch it at all. Pros and cons of both?

It is highly likely that tearing your tank down and putting it back together will kick start at least a small cycle. The more detritus you remove before setting it back up the better. Get 10 gallons of sw and rinse the sand very good and live rock also. Saltwater will not disturb the bacteria.
