I went on vacation over the weekend and had a friend check on the tank everyday. When I got back my carpet anemone does not look happy at all. His mouth was open. So I changed the water Sunday but his mouth was open throughout the whole night. He looks a little better now but mouth is still a little and definitely not as big as he should be. All the blogs that I'm reading is telling me that the anemone is dying so here I am freaking out. Is he gonna be okay? This is what he looks like currently.

Did you run some water tests? Tell us a little about your system. Age, lighting, etc

We upgraded the tank about 3months ago from a 16gallon to a 45gallon tank with a 40gallon refugium. We use LED lighting. Parameters pH 8.2, nitrate 0, nitrite 0,ammonia 0, temp 76.5. One of the other odd thing is chato does not do well in our refugium. LFS said water is actually too clean. So I let it go about two weeks and that's when I came home to my poor looking anemone. Calcium did tested super low.

I didn't see Alk mentioned. It is something I have to constantly keep in check. My nems don't seem too sensitive to it, but if I let it go it would be a problem. Your PH looks good but I would check Alk anyway in case of bad PH test kit.

Did you purchase online, fish store, or get it from an individual? I ask this because I have had the worst luck with nems purchased online. It may not have anything to do with your tank but have everything to do with the way it was handled up to the point that you received it. I have also had a hard time keeping them in fairly young systems.

It seems to me that your parameters are okay. If it seems to be doing better I would just try not to have too much flow or light on it and if possible keep the clowns away from it until it has fully rebound. On the other side of that, if you see a rapid decline and it starts to appear to be breaking down you want to get it out asap. I am sure someone with more experience than I will chime in and help you but this is what I have experienced with keeping nems.

Hi there,

ive lost one or two in my day, I hope this guy makes it but if you notice that it literally is turning himself inside out. Meaning his mouth is gaping open and the insides coming out then it maybe time to take it out of your tank. Also if you want to try when you pull it out if it smells like its rotting. Then most def its time to go. Hope this helps.

This is what he currently looks like.. I turned off the circulating fans, turn down the light, and moved my clown fish into the refugium temporally.. He looks like he's coming around... I'm keeping my fingers crossed I really like this anemone...

Looks good. :) The clowns a could be the ones stressing it out. Keep an eye out when you put them back in with the nem.

would kill everything in your tank. you would also be left with what looks to be green algae all over the walls...

It's still alive.. Has not bleach yet... Definitely shrunk and won't eat... I finally gave up starring and worrying about it so I stuck him in the refugium.. Less action there anyways..

Do you have good lighting for your fuge? How is the mouth looking? I ask because if it dies they can destroy a lot of things I your tank. I would at least be running carbon.

I have a 6500K in the fuge.. The mouth looks better but of course it's not 100%...

I finally gave up on the anemone.. His guts were spewing out and complete stop eating.. Still I wonder what triggered it?
