Hello,
My Kole Tang has been in quarantine for almost 1 week. He has deteriorated and crumped on me. Today he had labored respirations and responded intermittantly to stimuli. One of his eyes was Opaque and he had erythema on the base of his pectorals and underside. He was in quarantine with a blue tang. The blue tang looks great; is eating well and shares no similar manifestations. No fighting occurred. My Ammonia levels are non detectable. Any diagnosis?

How long have you had the tang? tank raised or wild caught
Tangs can be more sensitive to one treatment more than another tang.
Some tangs are more hardy than others. Maybe tank raised vs wild caught.
edit I have 2 tiny blue tangs and they seem to be hardy for sure.
I lost a tiny sailfin while the tiny blues are doing great.
My sailfin needed more acclimation time than the blues..

sustainable aquatics catches young wild tangs and raises then to juvi age is the closest I've seen to tank raised!

Seems we are both wrong.... Blue tangs are the only ones who have been bred in captivity

Possible is an issue with how it was caught. Sometimes they use chemicals, like cyanide (poison) to knock out the fish for easy capture. This can cause internal damage which is not visible for a while. Or maybe some sort of parasite or disease. Sucks, kole tangs are such pretty fish.

Are you treating with copper? Sometimes they can be sensitive. However, I just finished QT of a Kole and a Powder, and both did just fine.

I did the first dose of copper; however, copper levels aren't showing up yet. I'm curious if my skimmer is skimming out the copper...

i would take the skimmer off and add a HOB filter without carbon pad. Place some source of sponge or bioball from your DT to the HOB to help with the good bacteria. Might have to take the other tang out to another QT or place in the DT.

The skimmer shouldn't remove copper. If you dosed and you show no copper on a test kit, either you didn't put copper in, or the test kit is bad. Copper shouldn't "go bad". Unless you have carbon or other media running somewhere. I use an ammonia alert on my qt.

I just lost a Kole Tang in my QT as well. I couldn't get him to eat anything (seaweed, brine, mysis, pellets, flakes, garlic soaked) and he slowly withered away.
