May want to consider blacking out your overflow box. Even if the setup is not new, a clear acrylic box will grow diatoms and algae in it.

Regular cleaning will help. Diatoms will be a problem in any new tank. Should start going away after it ages a little.

Diatoms and other ugly films and algae are nutrient exporters/binders and help take up excess nutrients. So, I never blacked out my sump, figuring it can be ugly down there in order to help keep the display tank pretty.

I just transferred a 75 into a 125 gal just over a week ago and now have this brownish red film on the sand and rocks. Is that diatoms also? I have a built in OFB and is black plastic. Running a skimmer, UV and have phosphate remover along with some herb eating tangs. I am getting a 50 turbo snail order on Friday so any thing else I should do?

Just keep up with your regular maintenance and let your tank get settled in. It takes a while to find a balance.

Sounds easy but seeing it take over corals and suffocating them out is hard to watch. Should I change my daylight periods? I am running Maxspect LEDs.

Have you checked your parameters?

Is there anyway we can get a picture of it on your rocks or sand? More then likely it is just diatoms and you just have to ride it out. But I am worried about Dino's. Dino's will make a blanket look over your rocks and basically looks like brown snot.

I have old tests so ordered some new ones last night. I am running the six programs on the Maxspect and adjusted the times a bit. I placed a Chemi-pure Elite and bag of phos-pure with zoolite and I noticed a big difference the next day.
