Is their little bugs eating it? If so get a scooter.

it's more than likely molting or shedding dead skin. they do that from time to time

Like Chris said something's the will shed/molt old tissue during a growth spurt. If it's starts to shrivel up and release and discharge pull it out. A dying leather can really do some damage to a system.

Looks more like a pest is burrowing in it.. I've never seen a molt like that.

I thought for sure you would have seen one like this. Guess it can't be a molt then.

not only will a dying leather pollute the water it will smell up the house.

I'm guessing it was attached or laid on the side with hole a while. that it it decide to frag it self which they do from time to time or stressed. I would ride it out let it do it's own thing

I'm not the definitive word on it but I've had multiple toadstools, usually when mine frag, its more like a nub than a hole. Can you try dipping it? Or maybe inspecting it at night?

There was never anything in the hole. Hole started out very small and grew from there nothing ever came out of it and I have yet to touch it to clean it.

One of my leathers in my home tank started a small hole directly in the center of the tosdstool portion. Thought it was going to die as the small hole became as big as a solver dollar. I repositioned my flow from the tank over it a little more to help remove any waste, plus used a baster to blow out the hole. I stayed on top of my iodine dosing, and have been watching now for three months. It has almost completly seperated into two full healthy stocks. Not sure if this was what it was trying to do, or had something going on, but happy I now have two! Keep on top of flushing it, I really think was a key to my success.

Ive always used Lugols put few drops in small cup of water from the tank and pull the water from cup with syringe on to the leather been doing that for many years with my leathers seems to been working over the years
