Coco worm tube?

I was wondering if anyone knows if the tube of a coco worm can be shortened and if so how to do it?

I would be careful only because when they retreat into that tube you never know how far in it has gone. Could potentially hurt the specimen in the process. Just cover the extra tube with sand, that's what I did. I will just keep adding to itself in the long run. My 2 cents....

Thanks. Yea I decided to wedge him in between some rock work against the back of the tank
