We are in the process of setting up a QT tank. I have everything, but want to know what you treat with, and for how long.

Cupramine and Prazipro seem popular. How long, how much, and what else?

This is what I do. If a fish shows signs of illness, I fresh water dip. Most of the fish I do go from 8-10 minutes. The recommended minimum time is 5 minutes, but if the fish is not stressed and doing ok, I go longer. I watch the entire time! That knocks off or kills any parasites on the exterior of the fish and in the gills. The tank is already prepared with saltwater from the tank so there is biological in the QT tank and seeds the filter. Depending on the fish, depends on the treatment. Most of the time I use Cuppramine. Follow the directions exactly. Half dosage for the volume of gallons the first day, and then the second half 48 hours later. The fish should go for 14 days to kill whatever it has. Monitor water parameters (use the specific test recommended as the medicine will cause false readings). Monitor your copper levels as well. .025 mg/l is considered theraputic, .06mg/l and over is starting to be dangerous. Feed, but dont over feed. If you use PVC or any items so the fish can hide, I recommend sterilizing them every couple of days.

Great advice Terry. Nice to have a shop that goes that far to ensure healthy fish.

100 gallon Rubbermaid tub with 30 to 60 gallons of new and display water
Filter is a foam filter with a power head and heater with a grousing probe on a GFCI plug. When the fish first comes in it gets acclimated, freshwater dip and then into QT. FW dip last no more than 20 minutes, and if the fish is stressed 10 seconds. In the QT plenty of hiding places like PVC fittings or my wife bowls ( don't tell her) 1 month is average, one fish took three weeks to start eating so she stayed in there 6 weeks. QT is not always about desease but letting them get fat and healthy before competing for food. I do not use copper unless ich shows up and I bet it has been 9 years and that was for a Regal tang. Some fish cannot handle copper and some do not handle FW.

One thing I need to add with winter upon us remember when you buy a fish you are taking them out of the store which was 75 degrees and then placing them in your car which may be 50 degrees? I take a small ice chest this time a year and also in the heat of summer. You can warm it up or cool it down with tap water using a thermometer to keep it at 75
