Ok, here in the next two weeks i plan on finishing up my fuge. Question is what should i put in it. So far i know i want some chaeto, and i know i dont want any mangroves or calaupra for various reasons. What else can i put in there, pros and cons on each.

refugium for pods. Need LR rubble and some sand. Somehow they make it past the return pumps and into display. lol

I have about 30lbs of LR and a thin layer of sand, along with macro. Will that work for them I see some in the fuge that I have no idea where they came from, but doesn't seem to be a huge number like tens of thousands. I will occasionally see a couple in the display.

Just a couple of piece of live rock will work....

Rubble will too, but imo holds a lot of detritus... And makes the fuge harder to clean..

I put 2 good sized pieces of LR on a little stand made of eggcrate.... I can see what i need to clean and critters have no problems running up to hide when the lights come on....

I love mangroves and have one thriving on my bare bottom fuge...

I've kept a deep sand bed in my fuge before and will never do it again. There's not a lot of flow going through a fuge usually and that just allows for even more waste to accumulate. My tank seemed a lot happier after I removed the sand.

This tank has been up and running 3 years.... No huge problems whatsoever.....

I will say that grape caulpera works wonders for nitrates. I learned that when i removed it all for xenia..

I worried about caulpera going sexual and nuking the tank, or somehow getting into the DT and creating havic. Those would be the two reasons why I have decided against caulpera.

Mangroves seem to be more of a constant chore of cleaning salt creep off the leaves, and really dont want my water looking a dingy yellow. That plus from what I have read it really takes alot of mangroves to really have any effect.

Never cleaned or had to do anything daily to my mangrove...

I only have one but think its really neat.

Never a issue with caulpera goinf sexual either..

I know.... I kid.

Like they say what works for some will not work for others....

But i've had no issues with my tank and like i said 3 years, and its no easy task..... Others break theirs down in a year or the infamous 2 year mark...

I really saw a climb in nitrates after removing all my caulpera... But it never went into my display.. And i would feed it to my tangs, they love the stuff.

Mangroves are awesome Imo... So much so, i want a shallow tank added to my setup just for a few plants(trees?) and some critters...... Idk if the wifey will okay it though.....

Give it a shot and you'll never know till you try...

My old sump I had rubble and sand in the fuge. It was full of detritus and a pain to clean. My new sump I just run chaeto. I may build some pod condos, but there is enough chaeto for them to hide in really.
