View Full Version : Ways to mitigate bryopsis

So I had a challenge with bryopsis and the following has proved to eradicate this nuisance pest:
1. Dose Kent Tech M and slowly bring your magnesium levels to 1700 but be careful going above this if you have snails as it is a natural muscle relaxant for those little critters.
2. Dose 1ml hydrogen peroxide per 10gallons water daily, monitor your PH during the dosing.
3. Finally ensure you keep this regiment up for four weeks after you've seen the last strand of bryopsis and you should be in the clear.
As a caveat always ensure amonia and nitrite levels are zero and nitrate levels are 5 ppm or below. Some tanks will be above this and mine runs between 0 and 5 ppm.

Thanks for posting this great information

It's that last point that always gets me. I always bring the mg back down too early.
Don't forget that depending on your tank size that it will take gallons of tech m to get your magnesium levels that high.

Does Dosing with peroxide work on hair algae as well?

Did you do this with SPS in the tank? I've been dosing H2O2 which doesn't seem to affect SPS. In fact, I'm starting to think they like it! I have done the Tech M treatment yet though but I'm tempted to.

Sps loves the magnesium and also hydrogen peroxide, the softies don't like the peroxide but will bounce back after an hour or so after dosing. You'll notice great polyp extension with sps and clams also seem to love the high magnesium and don't seem affected by peroxide.

So my zoas will be ok if I dose peroxide

Yes, I have lots of ZOA's and while they don't like the peroxide they tolerate it and even grow during dosing. Just be careful and if you see a negative reaction stop dosing.

Cool, I'm gonna start dosing Kent mag this weekend. What dose were you using to slowly get it up to 1700?

+1 Mine get a little ticked off for an hour or two then open up again. I've dipped them in straight H2O2 and a 50/50 mix and they've responded well to it. Like I said, they'll be angry for a bit, but they'll open back up.

10ml per 25 gallons initially, I went up to 8 oz per day to keep the mag level at 1700. Really this is one where you need to test to ensure where you're at. I use a Red Sea test kit for magnesium which has worked quite well for me. Thanks, Eric

I have a lot of hair Alge and maybe Bryopsis as well. i would like to start dosing but i was thinking a stronger dip first would be good. Can someone give me detailed instructions on the dip procedure. like mixture of hydrogen peroxide to tank water and the length of time to dip. Anything else i should know would be great as well.
for dipping I am thinking:
i will be doing this dip in a 5 gal bucket, taking the rocks out of the tank to dip them in a maybe 1 gal hydrogen peroxide to 3 gal tank water mix. for how long? will this hurt any of my corals, starfish, snails, feather dusters that might also be on/in the rocks?
for dosing i will follow:

Eexcept i don't have a magnesium test or any Kent Tech M. Now i can get these as well if really needed, but how much sucess do you all think i will have with just the hydrogen peroxide dip and dosing?

The dips I've done are 7 parts water 3 parts h2o2. Submerge rock/coral in mixture for maybe 3 minutes (or until the bubbling subsides or dies down) Use a soft bristle toothbrush to clean them after the dip and place back in your tank. Emerald crabs are a HUGE help too. They will keep the algae away (or at least mine have) SPS and lps do not like the dip and it could do more harm than good to them. So I would manually pull it off of those. This will treat the symptoms (hair algae) but to be rid of it you need to find what's causing it and fix that so it won't come back :) JJ at Zephyr Aquatics helped me out a lot with my problem so I'd hit him up for advice as well. Good luck

I agree that that will work pretty well for hair algae. However, if it is bryopsis, I don't think you will see any noticeable improvement. The only thing that I have seen in tank is using Kent Tech M

ok guys thanks a lot. From your info and reading online I am excited to try this out. I will:
Dip
1. take to rock out of the tank
2. dip for 3 min in a 1:4 h2o2:tank water mix for about 3-5 min.
3. scrub with a toothbrush
4. dip to rinse in tank water.
5. place back in the tank
some concerns - will this harm softies? I have zoos, mushrooms, feather dusters, star fish, snails, crabs, leather corals, Xenias, LPS corals(Candy Cane, Frogspawn)
then dose as said before. I have read this can make you skimmer crazy so i will keep a close eye on it all.

well guys I did the dip Thursday night and have seen amazing results in the algae reduction. It all looks dead and is going away. My skimmer is pulling out a lot of stuff like expected. I haven't started dosing yet but I will as soon as I can get a way to measure out 4ml of H2O2.
I did have some loses though, my Purple Pseudochromis was hiding in a rock when it was dipped, I saw him panicking in the dip bucket and put him back in the tank right away. he lived for about 10min but then lost him. Also all of the feather dusters on the rocks didn't seem to make it.
My zoos, mushrooms, leather corals and other corals seem to be doing ok. they didn't open up much Fri or Sat but looked mush better on Sunday.
