temp fix, can you leave fixture switch on and plug into its own surge protector, and use that switch on surge protector to turn on and off?

Ok, so the light is tripping the safety device on the surge protector? If so then the surge protector is doing its job. Also, be advised that they are not designed to function repeatedly over long periods of time and may fail.
Sounds like you have a short in the fixture itself which can happen with age and corrosion. If it were my light I would try another surge to see if it trips and I would also pull the cover off the light to look for damage and/or corrosion to the wiring in the fixture.
Don't ignore the problem.

Sounds to me like a bad ground. Check for corrosion around any connections to the case. I had that problem once. Just cleaned it up and it stopped tripping.

I cleaned all the corrosions to all the plugs. I pluged it to a power strip and didn't trip.

when you dont clean salt creep off your light you trip your outlets, when you trip outlets your alarm doesnt go off, when your alarm doesnt go off you get fired from your job, when you get fired from your job, your wife has to get a 2nd job at a bar, when your wife works at a bar, she comes home with a random tattoos.... dont make your wife get neck tattoos, clean your lights every once in a while :)
