When I look to the side of the glass and into the glass, how can you tell if it is tempered?
It is heated until softened and then cooled. It is used in car windshields, showers, etc . . . bottom of tanks.
It is 4 to 5 times stronger then untempereed glass. But you cant drill, because it will shatter in a millions of little pieces.
So I need to drill some holes. How do I know if I have tempered glass or not? lmk

Get polarized lenses and look at it in the sunlight. If it's polarized, it'll have a rainbow effect on it.

edit: I see the rainbow with or without the sunglasses on the bottom glass

Use a laptop computer monitor. Make sure it doesn't have a polarized filter. It was driving me nuts while I was trying to use my MacBook to determine whether or not my 240 was tempered. I then later realize that the screen had a polarized filter which gave me bad results. I then pulled out the kids laptop which was an HP. It worked much better when using my polarized sunglasses

interesting after looking at the video clip and how it showed those lines.
Now if I look into the side glass panel the lines are up and down.
If I look on the front and back panels the lines are not up and down, but rather side to side and can only see them at top
and at the bottom
The tank is full of water and rainbow is only being viewed looking through the front of the glass but disappears looking into the side.

Does it go mostly dark when you go 45 degrees off rotation?

no . the rainbow light just seems to be created when the light is refracted when traveling from air through the water through front glass and side glass does not have the light traveling through therefore no rainbow effect

If you remove the glass from between the computer monitor and whatever it is that you're using as you're polarized filter, does the screen go dark when you rotate 45° or 90°?

I used polarized Oakley sunglasses. I didn't have the 3d glasses. Once I had the correct screen it was easy to tell the difference.

Who is the manufacturer of the aquarium?
Most will tell you if that size is tempered or not. Some even list it on their websites.

Normally I'd blast your comment! I love the look of a closed loop system. However, I've decided to go with mp's on my newest build. So I'll just shut my mouth!

Paul can you lend me those 2 mp40s? I have all these external pumps to use. Even if I can just get a couple holes in here to get the sw to the sump. and Dont know who the manufacture is.
I love those mp40s but I like a little bit of a different look without the powerheads.

most of the time look from the top into the tank its on the right or left side on the glass near the edges under the plastic trim if that made since

Usually it is hinden around or under the trim. Most of the time you have to look from the inside of the aquarium out to find it.

right now its got a ton of water in it. Ill clean it up a bit more around the trim and see if i can find something.

I got plans Chris of a bigger new tank, for tangs. Im trying to find where I can drill this tank that looks to be in excellent condition. This tank is in better condition than the 180RR I am using. Tempered glass is stronger so it only make sense to put on bottom. May not be able to drill the bottom, especially if tempered. This thread is about identifying tempered glass.
where it is and where it is not

I looked at the picture of the tank in your other thread, and that is a tough tank to figure out.

Hmm... If it is Oceanic you could be in luck. As far as I can recall Oceanic didnt use tempered glass on the sides, and for the most part not on the bottom. But, that is not for sure.

I was informed that it might be natures view oceanic but still dont know if its tempered or not

Yeah that is the problem. Oceanic made "most" of their aquariums without tempered glass on the bottom, but some are.

Here is directly from Oceanic.
http://www.oceanicsystems.com/education/faqs/
Is the glass in my aquarium tempered?
The bottom pane of glass on all Oceanic tanks (drilled or not) is tempered except for the Ultimate series and custom drilled tanks. The sides, fronts, and backs are not tempered. Please keep in mind that any drilling of the tank or alteration from its original manufactured state will void the warranty.
Hope this help.

Hitting a tempered tank is NOT a good idea...
Some of you may recall that I worked in a LFS long before most of you were born (60s and 70s). In the early 70s, they first started making tempered tanks. We had a 55 set up in the front of the store (this was a huge store - over 1000 tanks of fish). Lenny, one of the owners kept a hammer under it. When a regular customer would come in, he'd say "hey, you want to see something cool?", and he'd show them the tank, and wack it with a hammer. Unfortunately, he didn't know that tempered glass takes only so much abuse... On Tuesday night (SW stock came in on Tuesday), our best customer came in. Obviously, Lenny wanted to show him the tank. Lenny hit the tank with a hammer, and it shattered in a million pieces, and 55 gallons of water gushed out, all over both of them. "Yeah, Lenny, that's COOL!".

That's hilarious Bill.
Shane, just throw a WP60 in there.
Even if the bottom isn't tempered, I wouldn't drill it.

Haha! If only they had camera phones and YouTube back then. Awesome story!
