So, I'm considering a downgrade and will be using this thread to get my thoughts on "paper"
This build will take one of two routes, either sumpless with no skimmer, or sumped with a skimmer. I'm leaning more towards non sumped, but I'm open to suggestions and thoughts/comments.
So here's the equipment list:
Tank: ADA 60-F
Stand: Ikea Besta Unit with height extension
Circulation: Vortech Mp40 (will more than likely downgrade this)
Lighting: 2x AI Hydra (overkill, but 24'' would be too much for one unit to cover IMO)
Control: AI Wireless controller, RKL with 2x PC4 (will be upgrading to Apex as soon as funds become available)
Accessories: AI EXT Rail mounts x2
If I choose to use a skimmer, will be adding:
Glass Holes nano overflow con dientes
Glass Holes return kit with flow modulator
SCA-65
Mr. Aqua 11.1 Gallon Sump custom
Sicce (not sure of exact model)
This build will be EXTREMELY slow, still got to purge lots of corals from my DT currently, if you've seen any corals (non zoas) in my tank or inverts that have caught your eye, please let me know! This is including all my anemones!
Here's my price breakdown:
Tank: ADA 60-F 150$
Stand: Ikea Besta Unit with height extension 80$
Circulation: Vortech Mp40 0$
Lighting: 2x AI Hydra 0$
Control: AI Wireless controller, RKL with 2x PC4 (will be upgrading to Apex as soon as funds become available) 0$/225$
Accessories: AI EXT Rail mounts x2 150$
If I choose to use a skimmer
Glass Holes nano overflow con dientes 60$
Glass Holes return kit with flow modulator 25$
SCA-65 80$
Mr. Aqua 11.1 Gallon Sump custom 100$
Sicce 50$

Next week, I'll purchase the Glass Holes stuff, then in two weeks, I'll pickup the skimmer. Following that, will be the Sicce, then hopefully mid december I'll pick up the EXT rails.
The thing I'm most nervous about is the custom sump..
EDIT: Found the Proflex model 1 sump to be exactly what my tank needs! I'll be picking that one up for my self as a christmas gift :)
2nd Edit:
Here's my list of things to buy in the order I will buy them:
Next week: Glass holes overflow + Return
11-29: Order SCA 65 and Sicce
12-13: Order Sump
12-27: Order plumbing supplies, rail mounts, BESTA Shelf, Tank

Shoot me a pm for the scubba steve and the rose. I'm gonna try to run the sherman in the ada for a bit. As for the vortech, I'm thinking of keeping it, are you talking about a return pump or circulation pump?

I've been dealing with a really bad cyana and GHA out break the past few weeks since setting up the tank, started back dosing peroxide last friday and the results thus far are great!
Also tested my calc and alk today

Alk 7.5

Sun, 23rd Feb 2014, 07:12 PM
Been slowly letting the tank fall off the horse, but finally got my butt in gear and got my nitrates under control, now just dealing with GHA, but this should go away with a bit of TLC, I'm also attempting my first "expert only" livestock piece. If I can get this to workout, it'll be a great center piece for the tank, and I'm excited to see where it goes. Currently, it is a beautiful specimen and it's adjusting to my leds. More hints and pics in a few weeks once it settles in.
Pics of some zoo growth (and lovely GHA for that matter) should be taken this Friday.

So, I'll be resetting up this tank. Currently it has some fresh water plants in it so I'll be dumping those and going with something more fun!
I'll be doing a sherman rose tank!!
While I'll miss my zoos, I really enjoyed looking at the Sherman and the clowns in my 40 breeder and I think that's the thing I miss the most.
For lighting, I'm going........................................
Metal halide?!?!?!?
I found a great deal on a smaller fixture and with the bulbs that I found (while cheap) have garnished some decent reviews. I'm currently running the 6k light and I actually really enjoy it. I'll be increasing to a 20k light and the bulbs are already on order. Hopefully this Friday the tank will be taken down, cleaned, and salted up.
Need to buy:
ATO
Salt
ATO may have to wait a while as I've had some unforeseen bills come up but hey, that's life! I really want this tank to be as low-tech as possible so hopefully I can accomplish this goal.

That's going to be an awesome tank. What type of clowns will you be stocking?
Zack

Thanks man!!
I'm still thinking but I'm leaning towards a small gold maroon clown to eventually be moved into a 40 breeder. Golds and regular maroons grow extremely slowly so I'm not stressing.

Alrighty so here's the update of what's going on!
Since I sold my Hydras, I decided to go for a more affordable light source, and picked up a fishneedit 70w metal halide fixture along with a bunch of 20k bulbs. The site has a 50% off discount on their already discounted stuff so the deal I got was incredible and I love the fixture!
I also have a full spectrum par bulb left over from another build that i'll be using for this tank as a dusk/ dawn light. I would like to find a dim par38 bulb for moonlights to even out my system if anyone has any ideas of a good bulb please let me know.
My cycle's finished, and I'll be picking up some hermit crabs and snails from zeypher later this week.
As far as stocking goes, I've been really inspired by Rob's last tank (the 29 gallon anemone Hqi) so I've decided that this tank will be a bubble anemone tank. I've already locked two specimens in so I'll be getting those relatively shortly. The tank was started using live sand and 30% dry rock. The other rock was from my 7.9 gallon build a while ago. I'll post some pics of later today or tomorrow!

The bulb on the side of the tank is a ledtric par38 and the main bulb is a 70w metal halide bulb.
I may add a second par bulb that is all blue or find some way to add moonlights to the aquarium. Any ideas for easy moonlights?

So, i'm currently in the process of what I believe to be a split of my sherman anemone. I noticed at 5:30 the anemone seemed to move a bit more and seemed recessed, and I've been documenting it on video a few times. Hopefully both clones do well!

So just an update on things that I've been really sitting on.
1) Metal halide is great, but dang my room is getting uncomfortable. While talking to Louis today, I will be investing in an AI prime. I also have a nano possibly coming in soon and when I get the prime, it'll serve for a separate frag system. I also made the mistake of looking at my old zoos.. big mistake, so anyone have any cheap zoo frags?
2) This setup is much more "low tech" than the other. I will be purchasing another apex when the funds start coming in again, and an ATO, but now my temp control is my pointer finger and my ATO is a red bucket dumped twice a day into the tank. The anemone and clown do not seem to mind so alls well.
3) I'm looking to add some more water movement to this tank. I'm thinking one RW-4 or one Mp10 should suffice. Once again, pending funds. I think getting on top of the lighting is crucial. I find some days I turn off the lights to cool the room down even with only a 75W metal halide.

So a few updates:
First, Kessils customer service is top notch. Had some minor hardware issues with the light I got recently (fans too loud) and they will be sending me a replacement and a return label. Customer service FTW.
Second, I picked up a bunch of frags from JJ and Matt and Zeypher today, got some agave, captain america, purple death, and lime green palys.
Third and most pressing issue which requires a backstory.
When I bought my black ice female from el presidente, he gave me a small green bta as part of the deal. I loved the anemone but it never stayed put and was stinging a few things in my tank. One day, I noticed it was a tad smaller but disregarded it as it not liking the new metal halide bulb. Another reefer from arc came over to pick up a tank from me, and his girl friend said she loved the anemone. I offered to give it to them as it was straight killing zoas and they took it. Fast forward to a month later, I'm doing a water change and notice that the anemone actually split, and it's clone made it's way into my filter sock chamber somehow and was attached to a small rubble rock in the area. He's really bleached but his foot feels firm, he's attatching, mouth is closed. He's just super bleached. Now the problem comes that I have two recently split anemones, and they are loving the light from the metal halide fixture. What would you guys recommend as a good compromise to keep all 3 alive? I have no idea how much par I'm pushing but I doubt it's a crazy amount, but it is very bright.
Also, any ideas of TLC to the bleached anemone? Feeding? Leave him alone? Lower light hours? I can raise the light to give him an adjustment period, which I'm thinking would be the best idea.

If you can, try and get on the list for the MAAST par meter. That really helped me dial in my LEDs.
As for the nem I would start with raising the light and shortening the photoperiod. Than after a couple of days offer it some food and see how it takes.
Zack
Wed, 22nd Oct 2014, 08:46 AM
Was it easy to use? I've never used one before.. I've raised the light about a foot so I'll evaluate how it looks and adjust.

Wed, 22nd Oct 2014, 08:53 AM
Very easy, I just tied the sensor to a 3 foot algae scraper I have so I can reach the bottom of the tank with ease. Just be sure and keep the sensor completely parallel to the light when moving it around the tank.

Nice! I may have to try that! Here's a few shots from today. Did a big water change last night. Anemone looks nice and attached right now and the lights been raised to give him a bit less intensity.

And Kessil sent out a new fixture, their words, "honestly it would be cheaper for us to give you a new light than to repair the old one" not sure how that works, but absolutely fantastic that they are standing behind the product. 10/10 so far.
Also, a new upgrade may be in the works. It's not my dream tank but pretty darn close.

Fri, 13th Feb 2015, 11:02 PM
Yup. Even at the lowest setting it was quite a lot of flow in my 20g long. Try the intermittent setting where it pauses for a few seconds between flow. I prefer that.

Zack

Thanks! It's the one from the group buy :)
unfortunately still ill have the rw4 off, my water lines too high for wave and the constant flow killed one of my torches from world class
furam28
Thu, 12th Mar 2015, 01:29 PM
Nice! You should try the intermittent mode: on for 10 sec and then off for 10 sec (put on C mode and then adjust the dial to set how long the intervals are), and then aim the head upwards towards top and towards one of the sides of the tank instead of the center. In that way you create a gentle flow throughout the tank. The only place with heavy flow will be the area right in front of the powerhead. Maybe that will help. But then again my tank is a 20g long with no torches, so your case may be different.
Zack
Thu, 12th Mar 2015, 01:40 PM
Yeah I tried that mode as well but even on one dot it was too much flow :/

Just got word that the AI prime is shipping today.. too bad I'm broke :/.
I setup a savings account through a company called digit, and essentially it'll pull money every few days based on your spending habits into a "digit" account. I've had it setup for maybe 3 weeks and it's pulled 40 bucks so far. I'm thinking I'll buy the light once my digit hits $250 or when it's my birthday in June.. hopefully there isn't a prime 26 by then lol.

So time for a quick coral stock list:
Zoanthids:
Gold Midas- Clayton
No name zoas orangeish polyps- Koaboy
No name zoas- World Class? Or maybe Sherita
Orange Zoas- Dean
LPS:
ASD Gold Torch
ASD Gold Hammer
ASD Yellow Toxic Splatter Hammer
Hybrid LPS- Torch/hammer- Sherita
Neon Green Torch- World Class
Scuba Steve- Zephyr Aquatics
Acan- Zephyr Aquatics
Softies:
Aussie long tentacle neon toadstool
Pink and Green mushroom from Zephyr Aquatics
Unknown:
ASD Chalice? Maybe
Unfortunately I think my large toadstool, one of the last holdovers from my crash is dying and beyond the point of no return. I'll be monitoring it very closely over the next few weeks. I also finally added an ATO to this system after running it manually for the past few months. Best decision ever.
