so im back to the medium tank section on build 9 or 10(whos counting) . so after moving cable modem, the tank sits in its new home. stop by autozone picked up some 2.5% tint and applied it. came out nice will see how it looks in day light, hopefully i wont have to start over lol.
tank will have all my gear from previous tank, sump, return pumps, skimmer, reactors, bio pellets, and reef keeper elite. will be using vertex illumina fixture which is a 4 foot so fits this tank perfect. im hoping with the tank home with me i can get all my coral back to tip top shape and thriving again.
plan on getting a vertex skimmer and the color modules for led fixture, i may go to a Apex (still very happy with reef keep elite).

after thinking about it 2 mp10s on back wall may work too lol

my thinking is on the back wall they would be pushing water in a 24 x 24 x 21 area so really not a big area for them, same thing if placed on the sides.

By going from an established tank to another it can be done. But, like Chris posted, he had major issues leading to a total crash. Anything can happen.

so everyone can learn from my mistake, heres what happen. i got a lil to confident having done many moves of my own for friends and for elegant reef. i didnt come up with a back up plan incase things went bad. usually rock isnt out of water too long, but this ended up being a 8-10 hour move. after a few set backs with plumbing and other lil things, water temps dropping and lots of die off from rocks i crashed my tank. ammonia spiked killed a few fish and stressing the heck out of others. i did a quick 30g change and added 5x dose of prime, then proceeded to mix 30g of tap water(primed used again). tank has settled and clearing up, but i have no sps left after this crash. i feel bad and should have moved coral to friends tanks and then tore down and re set up, a holding tank for the fish should of been used rock stored in brute with pumps,i then could of take time setting up tank.
so im not getting out, i love this hobby too much. i have a bunch of my stuff banked in a few friends tanks and ill will be able to start over and be back better this go round.

My condolences on your tank man. You had some truly beautiful SPS colonies. But as you said, it's part of the territory in this crazy hobby of ours. I lost a bunch of my favorites corals, including a truly epic digi I got from you because of a faulty wire/driver or something on a DIY LED fixture that dropped in PAR and eventually bleached my corals out. The sad thing was that I didn't know the PAR was low until I borrowed a meter. Anyway, I feel your pain but I know this tank will be epic like the last one.

Sorry to hear about this man. I've barely started to see good growth on my SPS and it would suck really bad to lose them. I can't imagine losing a big colony I've had for years!
Starting over is probably a good idea. No need to ditch your old rock though, bleach it real good, dry it out, then give it an acid bath and dry it out. It worked great for me and was like having new rock. Do a search on reefcentral and you'll find threads on how to do it. Good luck and hopefully I'll have some SPS frags to spare once you're ready. I have some German blue digi that I got from Shane and assume he got it from you along with some other nice ones that might be on your list. Just holler at me when you're ready.

tank has been doing well, weekly water changes and monthly sump cleaning helps. Louis wanted me to empty the sump and dry vac it once a month see how things go. I put all the cheato and rocks in a bucket of water and then process to drain it and dry vac all sediment. I though they may hurt pod population but it hasn't. I'm still just dosing kalk through reactor via ATO. and running dr Tim's waste away and Eco balance. last test had everything a lil high in alk and calcium so I lowered the stir of kalk reactor to twice a day from 6 times a day to lower the saturation of mix.

Chris has the low nitrates hurt your LPS any? I recently ran into an issue where I have undetectable Nitrates and my some of my LPS don't look so hot? SPS looks awesome, Hybred Frogspawn looks fine but my regular Frogspawn and others don't look as good. I turned off my Rhowaphos reactor.
FireWater
Mon, 24th Feb 2014, 11:08 AM
I had the same issue Alton. Lower the nitrate the worse softies and lps looked. I countered by regular high quality feedings. Then I just let my nitrates creep up a little and kept them in check.

hey tony yes still running bio pellets. had to take kalk reactor off line, ph and alk is getting too high and I almost lost all my zoas, Sps are fine. I may just put less kalk to keep saturation down and also have pump mix reactor only twice a day. another option I'm thinking is when I get the apex up and programmed to have another pump to dose fresh water during day and then kalk at night.
Reefnub
Mon, 3rd Mar 2014, 02:14 PM
I had taken pellets offline due to them not working anymore and started dosing vinegar which got the nitrates down but I noticed my sponges started to disappear and are basically gone now. I also noticed my hammers are not growing like they were and the skin has receded from the sand up to the heads. I think either the corals are feeding off the pellets or from me being able to feed more so everything was way better off using pellets. That's just what I have noticed. But just what I have noticed. Yea I would just put less kalk to sole that issue man.

there is some in there I have garf and Oregon and blue milli coming back to me soon. just need to get this tank stable, keep getting lil hick ups, hopefully with new controller I'll have a some better insight to what is going on and be able to fine tune my system.
so far it's been an easy adjustment but still fun!

well got apex fusion running and so far I like it. but as always the crap hits the fan and a return pump went out, but a trick I learned was to plan ahead. my tank has two returns now most people run one big pump, I run 2 small pumps incase one goes out I still have one running. waiting for sicce to respond to warranty claim

Nice to see you got the Apex up running. I love my Apex system. Just got back from a trip in Ireland, but while I was there I noticed my ph took a dive and asked my house sitter to check out my ATO reservoir. Sure enough, the rigid tubing was stuck against the side and not letting the Kalk into the system. It was really nice to be able to see my tank parameters from the other side of the "pond" and do a spot correction and save my critters. For the money, you can't beat an Apex system. Now if they can only get their email notification system fixed I would all setup.

I'm running fusion and it's great, still in beta but works pretty well. setting up contact info is better it will email or text with alarms now. very easy to set up

battling hair algae, I took my tank back to square one after many problems. I'm running red seas no-po-x ona dosing pump and so far it's doing great. po-no lowered and hair algae turning brown

If you do not mind. Why did you go with the no-po-x instead of dosing vodka or vinegar? I am too battling gha and am about to start dosing vodka.

cause I like to try new things, honestly that's why. I did bio pellets when no one would, new lights and skimmers I get bored.

Wow that is insane. I went on the Red Sea site and it says it is a carbon source that bacteria thrive on.

Sorry to hear about the Hair algae, Chris. I've been battling some Bryopsis that I failed to notice when I transferred some zoa frags I got for someone into my DT. Now the stuff is crazy annoying to see flowing on my rocks near my "sticks." The good news is I am upgrading to a 100 gallon tank soon and I can dip my rock in H2O2 to kill the stuff properly once and for all.
I had a question for you. When you eventually moved your stuff over to your new tank, did you:
Dump the old sand and replace it with new stuff
Did you have to recycle your tank or just transferring the rock and stuff was enough to protect the bacteria
Did you wait awhile before transferring your SPS and/or nem's?

Sorry for the long post but I'm trying to be super cautious about moving stuff over, esp. my SPS and nem, to the upgraded tank.

always start with new sand, my mistake was I didn't store rock in water and it died off, when I set up tank it caused a crash(in 105). look up my 150 thread, that was a successful tank transfer, I moved all the rock and coral from 75g tank straight into 150, used 50g old water and new sand. after 1-2 weeks I moved all the Sps from my 70g into the 150. I didn't loose a thing in that transfer.
as for bryopsis if it's on a few rocks you can toss out then toss them out. peroxide doesn't kill it completely and I noticed pop back up. tech m work great but get a good test kit and stay on top of it, some of your coral will not like the increase in mag and stress or die.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about storing my new stuff in with some old water, and some pods I grow for my mandarin. Its a shame to hear that h2o2 does not really do anything to kill the bryopsis. As the nuance is on a price rock formation that I want in the new setup, I will just have to dunk the rock in a H202 bath for a couple of hours, rinse and then store it in a tub with tank water and a bunch of Tech M to hopefully eradicate the problem completely.

I really like the idea of having two return pumps. Do you mind taking a pic and posting of how you plumbed the pumps?

tank is long gone and sold. the over flow had two drains and two returns. so one pump to each return, I also like using vinyl tube on my returns and drains, easier to remover if anything happens
