Nice to start building towards another 8ft tank.
550 gallon, Ill have to look at that. lol That one may be to big. I dont think I can get it through the door.
The goal on this build is to build inside out. Start planning for closed loop and dart placement and work on an 8ft stand.
Ill be using a dart for return and dart for closed loop.

Thank you Dipan and good to meet you too. Build will go a little slow. Still kinda tossing up the idea of a 240RR or 300RR drilled for closed loop. an 8ft 240RR brick would be nice. we'll see

So this is where the future 8ft tank will go. All of this against the wall has to go.
I did find a 180rr to help me consolidate everything on the side.

180rr is being cleaned and water tested

Found this old school 7ft tank and looks like its in good condition. Glass is clean, no scratches, seals look good, going do water test today. Has a big glass center brace on it too.

seals are holding really good and heres the pic of the oceans motions:hypnotyized:
So if this tank holds may need to drill some holes.

I love the Oceans Motions 4 way. It's worth the holes. If you decide not to use it, let me know.

new pics For now wont be using the oceans motions, no drilled holes for now, but did some plumbing this morning. Using a basic hob pvc and split the gold dart 3 different ways. There is a lot of room in the tank without the overflows.

Looking good man! Where do you buy those valves? They are hayword right?

yes thats hayword plumbing. got the plumbing with the skimmer/sump purchase.
I am going to set this 7ft tank up. Did not drill it and will use a hob.
Its going to be a nice reef. 5 buckets of sand will get you a couple inchs of height.
Now the waiting game, while sw clears from the sand.

BBQHILLBILLY
Sat, 23rd Nov 2013, 09:50 AM
Sand has settled, little bit more salt, and this tank is ready for a 7ft reef. Lighting can be improved, but it will work for now.

Look for used on CL if u dont want to spend much....

The cameras are not that expensive, its the lenses...

I personally started with canon and ive been happy.... Any of the rebel cameras are a good starting camera.. I have a older t3i...

Nikon are good cameras too... But idk much about them....

Justin

Nice build man. I would agree, Cameras are fairly cheap on CL. I'm now looking for a good macro lens and the sticker shock is unsettling.

Glad you took the Pellet reactor offline. I used to have one and it was the single most reason why I lost so many great frags. Couldn't figure out in time but through the process of elimination, I found out the problem was the reactor. The little bugs were stripping the water down way too efficiently. Now I have no pellets and everything is thanking me for it, including the random pieces of algae growing in low flow areas.

Thank you Im increasing flow in the bad areas, increasing the amount of chaeto in the refugium, and purchasing a strong uv sterilizer are in my furture. Still tempted to run a cup of pellets.

Hi Shane, when it comes to cameras it depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to shoot. I have a friend that is a professional photographer he he swears by a Canon. He has been doing this for over 20 years and they kept the same lens mount so he can still use his old lenses on his new camera bodies. Kevin considers a camera to be a tool and the operator is responsible for the pictures. Another friend of mine prefers Nikon's. Check out some of their photos on their website. http://www.lionfishlair.com/gregandrenee/ourgallery.shtml Pentax also makes a nice camera and as long as you go with a K mount body you can use all the older lenses. It is the lenses that will eat your lunch. I have a couple of cameras and my favorite for macro pics is my Pentax. I was able to pickup a Lester A. Dine macro lens (originally designed for oral surgery pics) for a couple of hundred dollars and was able to take clear pics of the tip of a newborn seahorse tail when I was studying their caudal tail fin. My favorite camera for shooting wildlife is my Fuji S8600. When it comes to taking full tank shots it is tough to beat a Canon.

Another factor to consider is even stock photo editing software such as Microsoft Photo Gallery can make a difference in your photos, at no cost to you. Here is a comparison of a retouched photo vs the original.

Wow...wow. are there polyps available?

Yeap, it's zoas like that it makes me want to set up a reef tank again. Then again maybe I should just set up a SOWLR (softie only with live rock). LOL

Hey Shane that is a awesome system you built. I am glad to see I am not the only one that buys a tank with plans to drill it and then decides to go with a HOB. Now that you have this tank running what is going to be your next build? You still have two other walls you can use for tanks.

BBQHILLBILLY
Sun, 26th Oct 2014, 10:08 AM
Hi Cheryl. My preference is closed, std drill, bean, hob. I was not ready to drill this tank. After that great flood of the century, I didnt want to drill holes.
If you do it right, hobs can be awesome and no floods. Not as noisy if you put a lid on it. For future projects, I have been given permission to expand into the garage :)
This opens the door. I just need to control the temperature in the garage. I have that 7ft sump and will need bigger tanks to feed that sump.
Got to love this hobby. The passion will allways be there with me.

Sun, 26th Oct 2014, 01:41 PM
Look out everybody, Shane is about to do a major expansion. Does your wife realize what she has unleashed? I see a 500+ gallon tank in your future. When you talked about taking over the garage it make me calculate the # of gallons of saltwater I have inside my home and reminded me why when people ask how many tanks I have I reply "don't ask, don't tell".

You also reminded me I still have a Eshopps PF-800 laying around. Gotta find a tank I can hang it on. LOL

In a previous post I mentioned of removing the pellet reactor to remove cyano. In all fairness I reduced the pellets to a cup and now cyano gone. Here some pics.
I did not get pics of the cyano but it was covering the sand bed. Some coral dont like pellets others thrive. I have a couple chalice colonys doing very good and growing fast.

I had two 1 ton tanks break on me and have water throughout my house . Most people would quit. I believe you take a step back , then take 2 steps forward but you never quit. It's always easy when the road is nice and everything goes your way. When everything turns upside down don't ever quit . Ever. :)

Looking good! How much heat do you think the two new pumps will add as compared to the external?

Good morning . Hopefully being sicce5 very little heat. The dart was adding heat. First night running and it's quiet and everything seems good so far . The dart was ran 24/7 I think for 3 years.

Wow that is crazy my Pan Worlds never add any heat, I run my Vectra M1 external and there is no heat transferred. Aquarium only runs about 2 degree's above room temp, my skimmer pumps is a Rio 1700?

Yes I agree , the dart shouldn't generate heat in the tank and the dart did great for 3 years :) my favorite pump next to a hammer pump :) for now 2 sicce 5s to run 2 monster tanks.

The stability of this setup shows up with the sps being very happy. With this setup plumbed together I get very little change in parameters. That's a big advantage over little tanks where changes can be drastic.

I feel like I lost a couple years trying to recoup from all those tank breaks . But never give up on reefing. I always say take a step back but take 2 steps forward that way your always progressing and never regressing. Happy reefing I'm loving it. The key is progression and not doing the same thing year after year

Had my tank numbers tested yesterday and there was a little improvement needed. I've made the change and expect the coral to go through a growth spurt. Hawkins, foxflame , WD , grape juice, red planet are all going to grow fast. It's been long enough. Years of trial and error and I think I finally got something going here. I remember those days when I wanted to buy large frags because I wasn't able to grow colonies. Now it's totally different . I am growing colonies from little frags. And enjoying it

About 500 gallons for spshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/a02008dd7623ffdd2c8739f067d49509.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/bbb2837486e2ccfb8bc418ba264f9161.jpg

Would you consider your flow high or medium?

Medium to high. I run 2 pp20 in each tank . Those are like mp60s

I am cutting my expenses down. Very costly to keep a 500 gallon sps setup running and growing colonies. I have decided to keep my best corals for the new 180 and slowly take down the setup unless I get cold feet. So I'm selling corals but I'm keeping a lot of corals too

This setup is perfect for sps and I may keep it running with everything out . I'm still processing. 500 gallons of saltwater is so stable for sps. It's awesome

What I'm starting to think is to run the setup and keep the 210 full of saltwater only and move a lot of sps to the 180 part of the 500 and keep the sps happy . So I'll move the sand and the rocks to the new 180RR . That way I can slowly move one at a time to the 180RR and not rush while I monitor stability .

I fully understand and why I moved down from a 300 to my 180

This setup I learned a lot from and consumed a couple of tanks. Many lessons learned . This one is now just memories :)
