Ive been lead to believe, or have read that growing coraline alge is a very ling and time consuming goal. All those hand made rocks I put in the tank last night, well I have in my opinion very huge colonys of it growing on a few rocks already.....how in the bleepety bleep did this happen 8n less than 24 hours?
I put the rocks in and rearange them a few times ( did it again when i got home a few hours ago), and theni get curious about a time table for the coraline to grow. It said take a tooth brush and brush some pieces to get the spores to come loose and let your powerhead blow them aroound. So I took 1 small piece from my fuge and did that. But I did not expect results the next day!!! And I know its coraline because as you can see the rocks were dyed a turquiose blue. Now for my next question is that redish/orange brown growth good or bad? That rock was complrtely white 4 or 5 days ago.

There's a very good chance that if you're seeing Coraline algae forming on the rock in 8 hours then that's not Coraline algae. It just doesn't occur that quickly.
You'll see a small spot, and that grows a little bigger over a couple days.
Oh, it's not a goal. You'll find, over time, much like gargamel to the smurfs, you won't want it around due to it forming on the glass.
Looks like you've got a solid beginning and I'm looking forward to watching it develop.

What else could it be? I've loojed around and I hant seen abything that color that grows on rocks besides coraline....and I don't know if it grew in 8 hours or 18....all I know is I put the hand made rock in around 9pm last night and I got home at 3:30pm today

Could be cyano, but more likely diatoms. Both are normal in a brand new tank. It takes some time to get coralline to grow and its more desirable because it competes for nutrients with the other algaes. But, like Allan said, it can be a pest also. It is much prettier than hair algae or cyano. I had varying shades of cyano before it finally went away. This is the hardest part. The waiting game begins! Your tank looks really good though!

I had that on my base rock as well when I first dunked them in. For mine it was diatoms attaching to the new rock. in my case the hermits went after it.

its cyano and diatoms, usually first stages of new tank. also man mad rock sometimes "acts" differently than reef rock, it can still leach things also just its physical structure may cause diff algae to grow better.

Careful with that man, nems seldom fare well in new systems.

So far he has stayed put. I put on a dish glove and moved him where I wanted him and ge seems to like that spot. I've fed him two minows from my kids fw tank....my wife and were trying to figure out a way to get rrid of them anyway and condy food seems apprropriate

They have very slow metabolisms and when they die, they die very very slowly, so I'd keep a very close eye on it.

I sure hope he does ok. He just might, but I would have been leary about putting one in my system that is so new even if the cycle is done. I didn't put one in my system until it was about 4 months along and I thought I was pushing it. If you feed it a lot it will discharge a lot of waste into the water column. Which can fire up a mini cycle if your system is not mature.

Welp, when I got home Mr Tenticles (my anemone ) had decided he was smarter than I am and moved his happy butt to the swivel back of ny koralia power head. He did not become sushi as most of you are guessing.....but it did almost kill him. I put my dish glove on got him out and tossed him in the 60 gal on the back porch. If he is still alive tonight ill take him back to petco and get another pincushion urchin

Why don't you take him back and get credit in supplies and let your tank mature an month or so before you and more stuff. Just my 2 copper.

you could of kept him in the tank if it wasn't too mangled. ive had bubble tips take a few trips in my mp-40, i turn off all pumps and place on a rock and if the foot reattaches they usually heal.

That's pretty cold hearted. I'm sure if you dog were to get hit by a car you wouldn't just throw him on the back porch and see if he makes it through the night. Very poor reef keeping practice there bro. These are animals we are keeping, our pets, not just a decoration. You should re-evaluate your reasoning for being in this hobby. If it's just to have a conversational piece in the house, you're better off with art.

Well I didn't mean it that way I respect all my pets but I difnt think there was much of a chance.....he threw up the minows I fed him his tenticles were only about a half in long they were 3" and he had a bubble? I guess you'd call it in his foot near where his tenticles attach and when i moved him there was a slimey residue that started blowing around, it wasnt from the half digested fish as thode got took out of the tank first very gently to keep them from "infecting" the tank.....I read on another board that when those things happen they die 99% of the time.....sorry if I sounded cruel I'm really not I've kinda had a rough week at work ....sorry guys I appologize

i know its fun to feed your animals but i would at most feed a nem a lil bit once a week, your over feeding may have caused it to stress. ive never fed my nems, they just get what food the fish get that blows by. the foot would be the very bottom that attaches to rock or floor of aquarium, nems are very hardy in right conditions

My first nem was a condy that I put in my tank after about four or five months. It didn't fare well. I tried feeding it, much as you had. But in the end the thing started to disolve into the tank... and tumble around. I pulled it out and it was down right ripe. I was called out on putting it in the tank before it was properly seasoned. At the very least you need six months post cycle. But if you want to enjoy success, I'd wait until you hit a year without mishap.
This isn't a quick hobby, but that being said, a year flies by. You will be able to have a really nice set up before then... but there are certain animals that require a stable and mature system. Nems are one of them. I'd also steer clear of the condy. Nothing wrong with them, save for the fact that they aren't photo feeders. They require something that's a bit more solid. But not often. I think once a week or so.... and definitely not a big fish. I started feeding my nems by gently turkey basting the tentacles with mysis once every third month or so (RBTA).
