For the past couple of weeks , this hammer coral has been throwing out feelers. It has been a interesting behavior to watch.

Yes very interesting but not a rare thing for hammers to do. The hammers I have do this behavior nightly to check it's surroundings. I keep many of the hammers close together but just enough for them to spread out. This makes the area nice and full of hammer heads sweeping but also keeps the feelers from extending too far. Very nice and healthy looking hammer btw...keep it up!!!

Is it rare for it to do it during the day ? I would expect it at night. I wouldn't expect it to have its feelers out the entire duration of the day. Must be really happy in the tank. :D

I am new to reefing so forgive my ignorance here. :) I have a hammer that is actually two small stocks attached at the base. It look like a Y with out the bottom leg. The heads when fully out are roughly the size of a quarter. So when this coral grows does the base split into more heads or do the heads just get larger?

The heads will split into two and grow out away from the bottom, then split into two each and grow out, and so forth.

Splitting in two is a bit of a mislabel of what it does. It grows out, getting bigger as it goes while pinching (by growing) in the middle to form two heads, which continue to grow out and "split" again.

One begets two, two begets four, four begets eight....

Oh I see. That is really cool. It's hard to tell that from pictures you see because the heads cover the base up. Very interesting.
