Since nobody had really stepped up too much after the chatter this week, I wanted to offer my services, in the next week or two I will be getting a pretty big coral shipment in, sps, Lps, and zoas. If you guys would like to do this I would order the corals and then have 1-3 different ones depending on what you guys want, either one from every category or just 1 depending on what you guys want to do.
Depending on what the cost is there would be a small fee to get in, something like $10 per coral, possibly more if it is something really expensive. They would run for something like 6 months is what I read in the last one and the panel of judges would decide on the winners. Depending on how many people decide to get I to each category, the winner could chose a frag of anything in my tanks as a prize, I would either cut something off a colony in my 125, or a frag from my frag tank that is about to get going.
I am am open to suggestions if anybody wants to throw out ideas, if you would rather have somebody else do this instead of me that is fine, I just wanted to offer since a bunch of people seemed interested.

thanks paul but this is usually a maast event done through donation of the coral(im pretty sure) frags are usually free to charter members.
the problem with sps is finding a big enough colony to frag up. buying them would defeat the purpose of this fun charter member competition.

Thanks Paul and it is very generous of you to offer. After speaking with the board it looks like we will wait until next year to have a growth contest again. At the August Frag meeting we gave away some very nice War Coral Frags which would have been very difficult to judge in 3 month’s time to see who’s had grown the most, but still a very nice pick up for everyone that came to the meeting. Since it sounds like we have enough members who want to do SPS as a growth contest coral if you come across a couple of colonies of a great looking SPS coral that we can frag and set aside while they heal and then give out to members please let me know. I can submit the cost to the board for approval. What I don’t want to happen is find a very nice Coral get in a hurry, frag, and then lose half of them to unstable conditions.

So....as it's the new year...any news on a new growth competition? The sps sounded like a great idea.

Believe it or not this is one of the events I plan to spear head. I have ideas that are going to be discussed in a couple of weeks at our Board meeting and actually sent an email this morning to one of our sponsors to get coral pricing as well as prize pricing / ideas. So yes, this will be getting off the ground soon. I just have to get a presentation together for the BOD for approval and then make the announcement. It is going to happen! :)

There is a small wholesaler down here in corpus who can get colonies if needed I can help check on pricing.

I think it would be fun to enter this contest.
You will also be an extremely tough competitor! Very excited to have you! :)
If you would, please fo to the 20014/ 2015 coral grow out competition thread and vote for the categories that you would like to participate in that would be very helpful. Thank you.
I will work something out with you and anyone else down in the corpus area for getting frags to you.
