It takes a long time for a dsb to establish itself. Has anybody ever tested straws in a dsb? vented to outside of tank. just curious.

Personally, I think the risks of a DSB outweigh the benefits. There are safer alternatives to nutrient export.

ATS have worked well for me. They would work better if I cleaned them every week like you're supposed to. I also have not really found an ATS design that I truly like. Still trying to come up with a way to build an upflow model into a sump. I left the waterfall ATS on my FOWLR, but pulled the one off my reef. Although it did an excellent job over there, it was loud and in my way.

My waterfall one was super quiet. I came off a drain pipe and just had the scrubber sectio,n then on the end of the pipe I just ran that down to my sump in case the scrubber got clogged somehow. I also just cleaned mine in tank after awhile cause I got lazy. I never noticed a greening of the water though like others do that clean inside the tank. I know I had an older design but it worked good so I never changed it up. My biggest problem was coraline algae as Chris can attest to. Lol
But now I have a fix for that too!

Laziness is my problem. I have oversized PVC pipe cut into clips so I just have to turn off the pump and twist them off. I need to make mine bigger, then the water shouldn't be so loud.

If you clean it in your tank, what good does it do? I thought the whole reason for it was to clean outside your tank to export the nutrients the algae consume.

see with a fuge its designed for lazy, set it and trim it when you feel like it. add bio pellets for water change lazy filks like me and bam no nutrients lol

No I mean I just don't take the screens off the pipe anymore. I just used a pitcher and would scrape it while the screen was still hanging.

After reading the article again, wouldn't you have to be running your DSB too deep if you needed to vent? Or at the very least, wouldn't you be in need of more worms and/or other benthic organisms to help safely move waste down and gas up? Venting, IMHO, is a band aide fix to an ill maintained DSB.

I see, that makes more sense! :)
