I had a question on the cycling of a nano tank using water and live rock out of another tank I have that has been setup for about a year. I wanted to buy a new bag of live sand but use the water and live rock out of my other tank to start up a 15 gallon nano reef tank. Since the water and live rock are already cycled and have good bacteria in it should the tank be pretty much cycled from the beginning? The tank is one of the eclipse tanks by marineland that has the built in filter and lights but I'm going to take out the lights and replace it with a 16 inch led I found by Finnex FugeRay that I found on amazon for $50. It had good reviews and seemed like a good deal and should be small enough to fit where the old lights were.

You should still have a small cycle.

When I setup my new nano tank in late April I seeded it with live rock, water, and very little sand from my 4.5 year old tank. I bought the "live sand" as well since I have always had good luck with it. This helped a lot on shortening the cycle, but I still added additional bacteria and elements. You WILL have some sort of a cycle. My tank ran without any livestock for 2 weeks. My brown algae came in and left very quickly and my tank parameters have been spot on since then. I took about 7 gallons out of my 34 gallon and added it to my 16 gallon.
