Close to selecting my first livestock. I was thinking of starting with 4-5 yellow-tail blue damsels, but have heard a lot of horror stories. Don't want to spend to much on first fish because of lack of experience with SW tank. I would like to go semi aggressive (I like the fish selection better). Any ideas would help.

Thanks
Andrew

This would be my starter tank I eventually (if all goes well) will be going up to a 150 or even 200+ tank.

A lot depends on your definition of aggressive. There are a few smaller fishes that have a bad rap for a very good reason. Damsels, with very few exceptions, are aggressive. There are quite a few wrasses that don't play well with others. There are also dwarf lions, and dwarf scorpionfishes that would do ok in that tank. The biggest concern will be filtration. Wrasses, lions and scorpions will dirty up a tank in a hurry. You will have to stay on top of water changes and keep a close eye on your parameters. Since your tank is a bit small for any of the truly aggressive species, instead just do a mixed tank with smaller more common fishes and use it as a learning experience. Then, once you have a firm grasp on what it takes to keep the tank clean and stable you can upgrade to a larger tank and get into the bigger aggressive species. Bear in mind, most predators are very messy eaters (and poop a LOT) so their tanks can be a real bear to keep up with.

What are some of the more common fish? Could i start with some small clowns?

Yes... Clowns are in the damsel family , so often not recommended to mix different types. Be mindful most stay fairly small, so might become a meal for larger predators when they grow some (lion fish). HTH
