I have been fighting this for the last two months on the 28g Nano.

The red slime has little air bubbles under it and it covers the sand and rocks. The hair algae is growing on the live rock and is about 1/4 inch long.

Things I have already done for a month now: 30% water change every 5 days instead of my every 10 days. Have always used RO/DI water. Reduced lighting time to 6 hours a day total (LED's running at 40% when full). Always have been running Chemipure Elite. Feeding once a day. Testing for Nitrates and Phosphate (both at zero). All water parameters are at zero, PH at 7.8. I even tested RO/DI water for Phosphate and it is at zero.

I tried the Chemi clean and it cleaned it for a day and then it returned.

Please advise as to what you feel could really help me. I don't know what else to try.

Thanks
KT

Run GFO :) in a up flow reactor, the GFO in Chemi pure elite sometimes isnt enough

Water flow, you need more of it. Cyano tends to happen in the deadest spots of the tank, try to syphon some out and you should be fine with higher flow.

I too am looking for a gfo reactor for a 29 gallon biocube. any idears lmk.

if you turn your powerhead on that area, does it disappear?

phosban reactor 150 may help, not sure on the exact dimensions of the reactor

No, I have good water flow...i see my corals, etc flowing very well in the areas where the red slime is building in the sand.

Based on my water parameters, Nitrates and Phospates are okay. Not sure if a phosban reactor 150 will work?

Nitrates will be 0 in your tank the Hair alge is eating it up , Phospates will be 0 to the Cyno is eating it up ,remove there food :)

gfo works best with a reactor, but is anyone using it in a sock, for cube tanks lmk

GFO will bond to it self you waste your money if it isnt tumbling

I know most will prolly shoot me for saying this but I really like mixing GFO and carbon. In just 1 week in my reactors the gfo would stop tumbling an solidify. And that is even with me turning up the flow to full blast. But ever since I have mixed the carbon and gfo it is performing much better and it last longer.

A lot of people mix why I don't is the carbon will wear it self out in 2 weeks if not less and the GFO can go longer but everytank is deferent :) me I switched to the High Cap GFO you can tumble it hard and it wont break up or bond http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-bulk-gfo-granular-ferric-oxide-high-capacity.html

any have any luck with these ?

reactors are nice for big sumps but for cubes you dont want reactors hanging off the side, just my thoughts
and I agree the carbon will get used faster than the gfo, replace the carbon and continue to use the gfo (expensive)

Now these are cool but who these days can pay 100 for 1 not me hehe http://www.marinedepot.com/Innovative_Marine_MiniMax_All_In_One_Media_Reactor _Phosphate_Reactors-Innovative_Marine-0I10410-FIFRISPR-vi.html cool baby nano reactor

Exactly, you can mix it if you want, you are just throwing a little money down the drain, if you are good with that, you are all set :)

innovation marine makes mini reactor may fit in back or run inside for few week

I took a few bioballs out of 2nd chamber to lay a half unit of chemipure on top of remaining balls. I also did a large water change around 40%, then another large water change a week later and this effectively killed the cyano off.

Personally, I would remove all of the bioballs, they can be nitrate factories.

I dont use bioballs either, my nano chamber is floss on top, Seagel in middle, and chemiPure Elite on bottom with live rock pieces on bottom.
I wish there was a good way for nano tankers to run gfo effectively without having to purchase a external unit. The innovative mini gfo will not fit the JBJ Nano.

You could always run it in a bag. You'd just need to make sure it's coarse enough. Also, chemi-pure elite has a phosphate absorber in it already.
