View Full Version : Waterproof Point & Shoots - anyone using them on their tanks?

I'm not quite ready to jump back into the DSLR world yet - mainly because I already have more than one hellaciously expensive hobby. But after spending 2 hours in photoshop (and I know how to use it) trying to tweak the pictures off my Lumia to look like what my tank looks like I finally gave up and decided I just need a better camera.
So - Always having been a fan of Nikon (My first SLR was a Nikor!) I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Coolpix AW110. I owned one of the olympus stylus tough's a while back and my general impression was 'meh'. I gave it to my dad who loves it.
Also - wondering if there are potential challenges people have encountered shooting under water in their tank - the only one that leaps out at me really is casting a shadow when you reach in. But the bonus of being able to shoot from angles your big expensive SLR cant manage is there too.
Thoughts?

I used a playsport ZX5 for some cool shots, only issue I ever had was with shadowing!

This is what I use. I love it, and it's so easy to use I don't have to go to school to work it. :)

Footballdude - no - not to start a war - but iPhones are old tech and haven't been innovative for quite some time. I currently have a Lumia 920 and will most likely be getting a Nokia EOS (and it's 41 MP camerea w/ carl zeiss optics) later this year when it comes out. I might hold off on buying a point & shoot until then.
Allan - I'm thinking thats an AW110 like i have been looking at or at least close to it. I'm glad you love it - having someone who takes pics of their tanks endorse it is a huge plus for me.

I agree, but there are lenses that they make to improve the camera that actually look really nice, so I was just gonna suggest that over a point n shoot
PS - I work for Apple, but I am not one of the people that thinks they are utterly amazing, they are just paying the tuition while I go to school for engineering.

Awesome - I'm a SharePoint admin which means I guess in a round about way I work for Microsoft. :) I am also not a fanboy, but I am in a happy place right now where Microsoft is Dark Horsing some pretty awesome stuff onto the market and showing they are hungry to make up lost ground. My Lumia is the best phone i have ever owned - and I am really looking forward to the EOS - the 41MP camera (I believe it's actually 38 effective) is so sensitive (hast to be I guess w/ a CCD of that size/density) can supposedly catch images in near total darkness situations, and I believe I read somewhere that they are doing on the chip image stabilization for both photo and video. The Finn's saved Windows Phone IMHO, but I also think Windows Phone saved the Finns. :)

I have a lifeproof case for my iPhone - but I haven't tried it in the tank. This is from my old Motorola Defy:
