Paul's 125 Build

So, I was in the process of setting up a 45 cube, but then I realized that was not big enough, so I found a 65 that was used, but the guy decided to keep the tank, then I started looking for a new 75 or 90 rimless, then I decided I would be open to a 125 for the 6' needed for tangs, and I stumbled upon an amazing price on a local forum. Got it yesterday, rock, sand and water are in there now.


Got some live rock, and used the rock that I had been cycling in my cube along with some new base rock, the tank has been ridiculously cloudy so I threw in some filter socks to help remove some silt and that has started to help. I am going to be getting some new equipment over the next month or two as it cycles. I have one LED that I was going to use, I am going to need two more, also going to get 2 MP40's.

Fish are subject to change a bit but for now:

There is an over the back overflow that goes down into the sump, that will be setup tomorrow, need to go to Home Depot to get some tube for the return.

Have some big purchases coming in the next few months, two more LEDs, two MP40's and a controller.

Nice start! I will have to say the only down fall I see it that you did not have the tank drilled. I have had problems with HOB overflows in the past and do not trust them.

Thanks guys! The rock is not set in stone, zip ties and epoxy have been used. I just want the next month to fly so I can start putting some fish and coral in this.

Now I am able to see some pods crawling around, and it is nice to fiiiiinally have some life in there, I have no idea how I am going to be able to wait so long to add some fish, waiting til July 1 to make an order. On the upside, I signed up for OT this week and next week, so I will essentially be getting them for free, and have less time to think about them, oh wait, I work from home, D'oh!

Theres all kinds of critters in there. Mine get fed a little bit peeled deveined shrimp from HEB. They like seaweed on clips too. It was nice meeting everybody.

Ammonia hit 0 yesterday since most of the rock has been cycling for a few weeks and about 10% was live, ordered the overflow kit last night, was a busy day with WWDC kicking off and iOS developer beta stuff or I would have done it earlier. I will drill the tank whenever that gets here and then start looking into my first order of fish. I know with small tanks 1-2 is best to start with, should I do the same in this or can I add a couple more?

One of the chromises ended up turning pretty white and had labored breathing and died yesterday. Diatom bloom is going now, but that is starting to die down, picking up some corals that I had paid for awhile back this weekend.

I will get some pictures up in the next few days, but went to an LFS today, got 4 corals, I paid most of the money for a colony of green millepora, it was very very dark green in the store, got it home, and under my lights it is one of the brightest greens in my tank so far. the polyps are starting to come out and it looks great.

The second piece I got looked like some sort of a brownish acro, I got it home, inspected it and did a dip, did not see it until I was about to put it in the tank, but there is a little acro crab in there, I wish I would have seen it before the dip, but I was surprised that so far it is doing alright, we will see. But, the point is, this was brown at the store, got it in my tank, and it is pink with green tips, gorgeous piece.

The third is another acro of some sort, looks like it might be a stag, but I could easily be wrong about that, it was very bleached, but it was very cheap so I thought it would be worth the risk to see if it pays off. In the tank, it looks like it might have a purple tint, but we will see what happens over the next few months. I did see some polyps out already, so I am very happy about that.

The last is a green plate that has a few dead spots, we will see what happens with that one, but it is very bright under the lights, so I think it will be alright.

Also, I started dosing kalk in the top off, and switched from a 30 gallon water change every other week, to a 15 gallon every week, and my tank seems to be happy so far, my Miami Hurricane chalice has had 3 new eyes show up in the last 4 days, after having 0 new eyes for the first couple months I had it.

Drilled two holes in my tank with things inside and nothing bad happened, time for a beer.


Last sat week I got a few new pieces of coral, a hot pink millepora, a red dragon, a strawberry mint, and a rainbow millepora that was doa from divers den. This Friday I should have a ridiculously large amount of corals coming, they're gonna be nice sized colonies, I have a 20 long that is getting plumbed into the DT, the return line from that will have a filter sock to catch pests, just in case.


The 120 has rock and water inside, will get the plumbing up and running soon, and at some point that will be the grow out tank for my colonies, and have frags of all the coral in the DT in case anything goes wrong. Also, ordering a gryphon saw on Friday.
