Just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Bryant. I started my reef tank about three weeks ago. My tank has cycled and is now having an outbreak of Cyanobacteria and some other bacteria making it cloudy. I want to get a bigger tank I am a huge fan of the bio cube nano cube lines. I love the built in filtration.
12g jbj nano cube dx stock filtration and lighting.
10# of live sand
6# of live rock
1- leather coral frag not 100% on the exact name
1- kryptonite candycane frag.
1- yellow tail damsel
1- 3 hermits
1- Mexican turbo snail.

I think my cloudy water is from my substrate. I looked at it the other day and it is really fine live sand I picked up from my lfs. Also I have been cleaning my filter sponges and have been getting a cloudy almost red stuff out of them. I'm not sure if it is the substrate and the Cyanobacteria that I had. Also the Cyanobacteria is clearing up. Hopefully soon everything will level out and my tank will be fully functional and I can move some more livestock into it.

Today I found my feather duster had shed his crown. I hope he grows back a new one soon.

Welcome! I would have waited for that cycle to occur before you added any livestock/corals. It can cause a lot of stress. Clean your filter daily and maybe add some chemical that will help trap the floating substrate until it clears up. Some filter floss works great on this (blue and white). The last substrate I added to my new tank took about 2 weeks for it to fully clear up. The hardest part is waiting to add stuff. Patientce pays off.

Welcome to MAAST. There are a lot of good people on here, with a lot of experience. Shout if you need help. My best advise to newbies is to go slow. A lot of people go too fast, stuff dies and they have problems, and end up getting out of the hobby. Slow and steady wins the race and will keep you entertained foe years to come.
FYI- not sure if you saw this, but this weekend is our annual Port A trip. Good time to meet people face to face. Lots of fun stuff going on. Maybe even charter up... See the announcements thread.

And btw that does not really look like cyano it looks like diatoms which is completely normal. Give it some time and it will clear up. Oh and water changes.

Hey thanks guys. You guys have already welcomed me to MAAST lol I've posted some things already. Also REBridges I let the tank cycle for two weeks before I tried to put anything in it. I understand the nitrogen cycle completely the tank has been running strong for over two months now and I just put a yellow tail damsel in last night. It is doing amazingly well in it today :)

You will probably regret that yellow tail damsel eventually when he becomes aggressive towards your other fish added. Most people do. That being said, we had a couple for years in our tanks, which were our first fish. There were times we hated them and times they were fine. :)

Thanks mike I will be deploying for six or more months soon so I won't be putting anything else in for a while sense my wife refuses to do anything but take care of the tank while I am gone so by the time I'm back the 28 will be set up. And I could always give him/her away to someone else as a starter fish to cycle a tank
