After a few months of starting hobby: got a rodi system, bought salt in 5 gallon jugs instead of 50 gallon bags. Got an ATO.
Recently: inceased my ATO reservoir from 10 gallons to 15 gallons.

150 gpd ro/di unit and tank to hold and make water whenever I want when I want
have 2 running sw tanks to transfer coral, LR, sand back and forth
have a big refugium for so many reasons
edit: adding a pvc drain to the plumbing that for water changes;
ie place 5 gallon bucket under the pvc, turn nozzle, and drain, move, add another 5 gallon bucket, repeat the process

Have not gone RO/DI unit just yet, but I did go from buying 1 gallon jugs from the local HEB to buying two Home depot 5 gallon buckets and get RO/DI water from LFS. Still a bit of work, but easier unloading (2) 5 gallon buckets rather than (10 - 15) 1 gallon jugs.

Just got a refractometer today, sure beats having to fight the bubbles and not get an accurate result because of it from a hydrometer.

Tips, tricks, techiniques, and hints. Things to make our life easier. What do you do, or have you done, to make your reefing life easier? Here are the top things I've done to make my reefing life easier:
went skimmerless
put controllers on all of my tanks
started raising phyto in 35ppt saltwater, instead of fooling around with the whole "1.019" nonsense
Can you explain how skimmerless made your life easier?

she does religious water changes and has corals that dont mind water on the high nutrient side. i wont say dirty water cause she does do water changes regularly.... thats what i gather from chatting with sherita.
as for me adding a controller and ato made my tank easier and more stable

Spend less money on my tanks, makes my wife happy, and my reefing life happier.
The number one thing has been the $115 I spent on a controller to protect my tank from over heating over the years when my AC broke down at least once a year for the last 11 years.

Chris pretty well nailed it. I do small water changes twice a week. As for easier.......no more skimmer cleaning, tuning, or overflows. And I use the skimmer section for more live rock. I'm currently keeping zoas and palys, lotsa different lps, and a couple sps. Growth is good, color is great.

2 water changes a week seems like a lot more work than cleaning a skimmer once a month or so and draining a cup once a week....
I do one every 2-3 weeks...
I keep it easy by having a long hose to pump my mixed saltwater from my garage to my sump. No carrying or lifting anything!
plan to one day make it more easy by drilling through the wall to run lines for easier water changes....

I timed it once. I can do a water change in about 5 minutes. The time doesn't seem like much, until you factor in removing the skimmer from the sump to clean it when the pump and body get nasty, dealing with overflows that are pretty common when you feed corals as heavily as I do, constant tuning to deal with changes in nutrient levels. There is also the removal of the added expense of a skimmer.
I'm currently running 5 tanks. Of the 5, 3 are skimmerless, 2 are not (the 72g wrasse reef, the 140g fish reef). The skimmerless tanks are MUCH easier to care for, IMHO.
I found a new way to make reefing easier. Milwaukee Digital refractometer. This thing ROCKS. No more hand held refractometers for me!

How big is the digital refractometer that you can't hold it in your hand??? Must be huge!

We took Marcus 's feeding box a step further. Ours now has a lid and is glued to an old mag float. So at feeding time, we throw the frozen cubes in the box, close the lid, and situate it in front of a power head. The vortech dissolves the food, disbursing it to the tank.
disclaimer- this works great on the reef tank, but with the aggressive eaters in the FOWLR I have to move the box around some to keep the puffer, trigger, and emperor angel from picking at it through the egg crate and hogging all the food.

I made it easier by slowing down and quit trying to keep up with magazine pics. I enjoy my tank much better when I know what's wrong with it and slowly fix those issues.

I’ve made reefing easy by using this wonderful forum. The MAAST community has helped out a lot and buying corals and other things from members always makes it easier when trying to convince the wife to spend the money. Also the corals bought on here are very nice and healthy.
